In say, the 70s, the peak age for a chess player was probably between 35 and 40, but chess is getting rapidly younger.

As you get older you may lose your ability to play blitz games. I am 72 years old and can attest to that fact.
I'm 23 and i'm horrible even for 10 year old kid. Just trying to improve...

yeah or drugs would alter you playing ability as well i would think.

You're right, chess players peak at around 31 according to an article I read (wether I should believe everything I read is another story though. Especially hanging around these forums)
