Arghhh!!! I can't read an opening book

I am trying to read one but innumerous variations distract me from focusing on reading. I just could find myself, rereading it like 1000 times on same page...

omg

Don't read the book, play the book.

When I go through a chess book, I play out everything on the page on my chess board. I usually attempt to go another 10 or so moves in just to see what would happen and analyze as I go. Anyway, it is nearly impossible to hold all the variations in your head, as chess board allows you to go through them one at a time and thoroughly.

even easier: Download a chess interface program where you can type moves in.
When i read one i will just quickly type Rf4 and it moves the rook to f4. I see it on the board and I can create variations without resetting all the pieces.

What I do is go through the game first without the variations, then when finish, go back and do the variations.

While that seems wonderful, my ultimate goal is to play OTB and play it well. Having a chess board in front of me allows me to feel the pieces in my hand and to truly see the board. In my eyes, that is the only way, old school as it may be.

Fair enough, I've read of the 3D board being a problem for many people, so it makes sense.
I consider myself lucky that I hadn't even played online until about 2 years ago, and from when I started I was actively involved in a school club. Now im teaching chess so I see and work with 3D board everyday. So I don't have to deal with what seems like a very annoying issue.
