Arrogance

Why are some chess players in real life (and sometimes online) so arrogant? I'm not saying all of them just when I played an IM at my local chess club. He was real cocky and arrogant. Sort of made me stop playing real life chess and I just stuck to online when I can mute a jerk.

Hmm. Well, you didn't say who you were talking about. I guess some people are just cocky and arrogant.

Some people who become good at chess never develop normal social skills.

I would guess that the ones who hope to get paid for giving simultaneous exhibitions learn how to be gracious winners.

How much were you paying to play the IM?

mchekole

I didn't pay anything. He gave a chess lecture and then said he would play us free of charge. I learned a ton. He said my openings were real good so I forgave him for his cocky attitude.  he handicapped himself and and played us one by one 1 minute on his clock 5 minutes for us. The handicap kinda told me he was very cocky even if he beat us.

Bruh, he's not cocky nor arrogant. He just gives you his time and energy. You should be thankful a player with such experience wanted to help you out. What exacly did he do that made him seem arrogant?

mchekole

Well he said after he finished playing one player he needed more "victims"  of course I was grateful to play him and I did thank him for playing me, but the victim comment and he playing 1 minute on his clock that not arrogance?

justbefair

I don't think the 1 minute vs 5 minutes is anything. That is typical when there is a large rating mismatch. You should watch some of the Twitch streams of people like Ben Finegold.

As far as the "victims" remark, it could certainly have been an attempt at a joke.

You will probably find Finegold to be arrogant. Some people do. Many people think he's pretty funny.

That's nothing. Think it through his point of view. He's wasting his time without enough challange. You haven't met really arrogant chess players

TrueMikeTyson

He seems like a nice guy lmao. You're the one who's arrogant for being so sensitive

UpcommingGM

Not just chess players, there are arrogant people in every field you can think of
