theyve done it

theyve compared chess with the london system

First off, yes, chess is a sport. But it’s no way near the physical and mental effort of playing a physical sport like rugby… chess is more so like the Olympic game where people walk in a weird way in circles to get a gold medal. I don’t consider that a sport but it’s some how is so if that can be a sport then chess can be a sport… and if chess can be a sport then monopoly, checkers, etc (basically all board games).

How did this devolve to sport/game/hobby talk?

anyway, my two cents, chess is an art, also.

Mental gymnastics should be in the Olympics

Well this post devolved into a sport/ hobby talk because the OP wasn’t worth continuing the conversation and a change of subject warranted.

While it's challenging to generalize the motivations behind specific individuals' behaviors in chess games, there could be several reasons why some opponents exhibit arrogance or combative attitudes. One possibility is that they may be seeking a sense of superiority or validation by belittling others. In competitive environments like online games, some individuals might try to boost their own self-esteem by diminishing their opponents' skills or achievements. Another factor could be the anonymity provided by online platforms, which can sometimes lead to less inhibited behavior and a willingness to engage in confrontations. It's important to remember that age or personal insecurities might contribute to such behavior, but it's not exclusive to any particular demographic. The best approach in such situations is to maintain sportsmanship, focus on your own game, and not let their behavior affect your enjoyment of the game.

@chickenxray I think it is p clear OP isn't, in your words, "whining over losing."

sapphire_kaleidoscope

I do not know why such behavior is common on this site, but I remember some guy told me that trash-talking is common in the chess parks or something, and in some setting (I don't remember what setting) it is actively encouraged...
I feel it has something to do with the male-dominated nature of chess. If my female friends and I were to play chess (sadly, I have no female chess friends), i'm not sure that we would naturally begin trash-talking each other...

Your most people aren't my most people. That's arrogance right there.

Trash talk seems to be independent of the kind of challenge involved.

You might be conflating.

I for one love the banter! I think it’s so much fun…you just need to play along or dish it back.

@paper_llama

take your meds and go rest for an hour, then come back and try to post something that does not have to do with hurting somebody´s feeling or putting someone down

Player vs player.

It's the more interesting way of playing since it involves breaking down a game into numbers and devising strategies against other humans as opposed to going for whatever extremely easy goals the developers built into the game... probably aimed at the average 12 year old.

It's weird for me to hear a chessplayer say they dislike PvP... chess is entirely PvP (or... I guess there is a horde of casuals who do nothing but play against the bots... but anyway)

EscherehcsE

PvP, NTR... I just can't follow the script...

Beginners don't know anything about chess, so they have really weird ideas...

NTR is a sexual thing... he's saying he'll have sex with your queen while you watch.
