So I was about to enter some team tournament, when I read this quote :

“When you are lonely, when you feel yourself an alien in the world, play Chess. This will raise your spirits and be your counselor in war.” ~Aristotle

I mean... whaaaat ? Chess was invented around 1800 years after Aristotle's death, I know I'm being pedantic but... come on

bunicula

could have been aristotle onassis or some other aristotle.  perhaps you weren't pedantic enough.

A lot of sites on the net present "quotes" from famous people that historians consider to be very dubious in origin or outright fabrications.

This one seems to be much worse than the average fabrication.

It is perhaps an issue of translation from ancient language into modern language. There is a similar translation of Legge's with the Mencius.

Don't know if anyone is going to read this, but this article explains the confusion. Basically the confusion is that writers from others cultures in the past inserting the word "chess" into some other game that Aristotle (and Confucius) made comment about.

"The history of chess can be traced back nearly 1500 years, although the earliest origins are uncertain. The earliest predecessor of the game probably originated in India, before the 6th century AD. From India, the game spread to Persia. When the Arabs conquered Persia, chess was taken up by the Muslim world and subsequently spread to Southern Europe. In Europe, chess evolved into roughly its current form in the 15th century." -Wiki.

The origins of chess could extend back as far or further than Aristotle's time. In any case, modern chess came into it's own 1500 years ago, so around 500 A.D. That would make it only 800 years before Aristotle's time.
