At chess weekend congress I approached a G.M and asked if i could ask him a question, yes why not he said: I asked if you knew you had only one game left you could play, as white what opening would you choose aa white! G.M paused and replied either the Scotch Game, or the Ruylopez, why i asked he replied either opening would give white best chance to win, why I asked, he replied, both openings give white a 4 to 3 pawn advantage on the kingside. how fascinating!?

Why choose ruylopez or Scotch amongst so many openings, is it purely based on pawn structure advantage, as they are not the easiest openings to master for the average hobby player!?

He is a GM. It does not matter in his opening choice that hobby players can master it or not.

True statement Fet, its not down to G.Ms to cater for whether any hobby player can or cannot master a difficult opening, I myself do not have such issues and can play most such standard openings to a reasonable ok level but can relate that people with less experience of time would struggle with such openings!?

If they struggle, then they should learn it. Personally, I know how to play about 20-30 openings.

I think i prefer a more supportive outlook, but your entitled to your opinions of course.

Learning openings is pretty easy, but it may be boring. My advice is that you should not memorize all lines but learn the ideas behind openings. It's much more efficient and easy.

I do not need advice myself personally i have been playing for 46 years for my local county and in over the board tournaments and during that time have met many G.Ms and found there opinions interesting, some being tentative in there thoughts some not so as with life and chess is very much as life like the famous quote by Lasker.
