I learned at 7 from my dad, I am 12 now
At what age did you learn chess?
I've known how the pieces move for as long as I can remember, but how to play the game I will never learn.
Fischer won the world champinship when I was in 5th grade, and the boys in my class played everyday for about 3 months. You can imagine the level of play. I hardly played after that mostly because I couldn't find anyone who wanted to play. I started playing again when I was 23. I took a hiatus of about 15 years due to work and family and started playing again about 5 years ago. I'm 50 now.
I'v learnt Chess When I was 6 years old, but I'v learnt only the main rules, I didn't know what was a draw or castling that time, as well as en passant. So we were playing with a king vs a king with no problem at all! LOL.
I'v learn Serious chess with the extra 3 rules when I was 23 .. that was when I'v joined this site. I'm 25 years old now.
Perhaps some would ask me why didn't I learn the rest of chess by the time I was 6 years old, and that's a good Q. But the truth is, that Chess, unlike soccer, isn't a very popular game in my country. And like many I left it then to play soccer, just got back to it 2 years ago
.
I've known how to play for as long as I can remember, at 4 or 5 I could beat the average 14 or 15 year old without actually studying anything, just by making my own stuff up, then I didn't play for like 9 years and now 15 and I'm fairly average :(
My grandad taught me how to play when I was about 5 or 6, he also had an electronic chess set that he let me play against (don't know what kind it was it was 1985ish) he passed away when I was about 8 and I never really played much more than a casual game with friends, that I would more often than not win. This meant that whenever I suggested playing chess no-one really wanted to. I didn't get the same satisfaction out of playing against a computer and so between the ages of 8 and 30 I probably only played a dozen games or so. I've played over 1000 games since joining chess.com in the last 18 months so which is where I really started to LEARN. Maybe this is a topic for another forum but, if I could be granted one wish to have the chance to play against any person dead or alive it would be my Grandad.
I got taught the moves when I was about 6, but I wasn't super-interested.
Basically I learned how to play chess this year - I am 17.
14.. too late..then from 16 to 39 I've been out of chess. Then thanks to Internet the latent chess virus woke up strong than ever and I've even played 2 OTB tournaments recently.
About 12 weeks ago. Wish I knew how much fun it was nearly a half a century a go. Only disappointment is the uncalled for remarks and no remarks at all. I know the world is changing but for the better? I don't know.
I learned how to play chess by my father when I was 8 years old. I'm 30 now.
You?
