Any King's Gambit players want to play a few unrated 5/5 live games?  I'm looking to play this Petroff line as black.  Send me a friend request and we can play live.

Courtney-P

Tomorrow is cool.  I'm available all day tomorrow between 11 AM and 5 PM CST.  I'm off all weekend so if that works for you let me know.

If not, then after 5 CST during the week?

Cheers.

Post the games here, please.

Courtney-P

Yeap.  If it goes down, I'll post a PGN.

Here's the book on this line.

My Petroff repetoire recommends.. 1.e4 e5 2.f4 exf4 3.Nf3 g5.  But I have played it and hate it.

I'm already playing a few online games with this Petroff line but not against KG players.  Just random seeks.  Soooo if anyone out there is a KG player and wants to play some unrated 3 day per turn games; let me know and I will send a challenge with the Petroff position.

Happy to chat during the games as well after friend requests are accepted.

Btw i dont get how Americans can call "Russian Game" as "Petroff's Defence" which is "Petrov's Defence" It sounds racist! Ugh!

@SinofSloth:

The repertoire book I purchased by Konstantin Sakaev whom is a Russian GM refers to it as "The Petroff".   So I think that is just your perception.

@lutak22:

That's awesome, do you play the King's Gambit often?  Send me a friend request and I will challenge you.

Oraoradeki

IMO its very drawish, and attempts by White to spice things up usually backfires. Which particular line do you play?

Courtney-P

@Oraoradeki I haven't played more than five games from that position but I like the 4. ..Ng5 line above.  I have also seen 3. Nc3, 3.Nf3 and 3.Bc4

Oraoradeki

3.Nc3 – probably the safest option, heading into Vienna Gambit. And to make a correction above, 4.fxe5 is played more often.

3.d3 – a reversed (traditional) philidor. Very counter-intuitive to play a KG only to shut in the light bishop a move later (main idea of KG is to spike on f7, so White’s light bishop usually comes to a2-g8 diagonal)

 3.Nf3 transposes to the 3.fxe5 line mentioned above after 3…Nxe4 4.fxe5

3.Bc4 exf4 transposes to the main line of the “Bishop’s Gambit”. As White I’ve never really considered this option but now that you mention it, I think this is worth a try. Annoying replies by Black would be 3…Nxe4, 3…Bc5, 3…c6 (prepping …d5)
