auto resign?

I’m no expert in chess and don’t claim to be. I was wondering why “auto resign” comes up in some games if there hasn’t been a move in a certain time, but in other games it doesn’t come up even if the other player hasn’t moved in 5 mins plus (usually when they are getting beaten) and just let the time run out!? As stated, this can be waiting for over 5 mins!!
