After one tournament game where I beat a girl who was probably around 10 years old, her mom came up and asked me "who trained you how to beat my daughter?"

Her daughter was 1200 by the way.

Reminds me of when I was in elementary school. Kid named Geon was 1200 rated in first grade. We all thought he was a god and we worshipped the ground he walked on. He lost a game and we’d be like “geon how did you LOSE!?!?” He would say, “guys I’m not that good” but none of us believed him.

Now I feel sorry that he had to deal with us

That’s my situation.

… elaborate????

People think I’m a god at chess, but as you can see, I’m average or even below average.

This is not what average looks like

Sounds like a typical average asian parent .

Like our parents like to boast so much , sometimes they say stuff that's embarassing.

Or this gem from my wife's sister:

"You can't REALLY call yourself a chess player.  You aren't in a club and have never played in any tournaments."

She has a point tho. Technically, anybody who played at least one game of chess can call themselves "chess player", not sure if that applies to people who played zero game, zero lessons and only one puzzle on an account from 2014.

But most people use this type of term for people who play on a pro or semi-pro level of seriousness. Someone who just plays some ball with friends in the backyard is not a fotball/soccer player, someone who sing in the shower and plays a couple accord on guitar is not a musician and someone who cooks a mean pasta is not a chef. Chef is the most obvious since it's a job title.

These are so funny, I wish I could have seen the look on your face when you got these questions.

I encountered a variation of #8:  "Okay, you beat me in 20 moves, so you are not bad. But yesterday I played this other guy and he beat me in just 10 moves. So he is REALLY strong."

I told my mom about mine and Carlsen's online rating. I told her I was 1600 and he was 3200 .

"You played just a year and you are 1600 . I am sure you will get to 3000 by the next year "

1600 within one year is pretty impressive, though.

People keep asking me if I am a master in chess in my city. I have to tell them, no, but I’m trying, and it’s hard to study my chess if little kids keep walking up to me to ask me stupid questions. It doesn’t help that my 1969 uscf friend keeps saying that I’m a master and I’d kick his butt. Like dude chill, my rating is like four points higher than you jeez

I meant in over-the-board, not online.

Yes, but in my case, they’re not asian. They’re white xD

A-Primitive-Idiot

I don't know what you mean by that. What does "talking you" mean?

You wrote "talking me" instead of "telling me". Mystery solved!

I think the average USCF is around 1400, not so? Or are you specifically talking about "club players" or whatever that means o.O
