People always say tactics! Of course tactics are extremely important and a good player always check tactics first before doing strategy but most of the time he/she skip a lot of position checking tactics cos he/she knows that tactics is not applicable.  And also remember dont waste a lot of time checking tactics. Let me ask you some examples of tactics.

Dont learn tactics as positions! 1.  Smothered mate. White to play

Once you mastered and can apply that tactic position, how much rating will you increase? I bet less than 2. Why? You will rarely see that position in real life  is less than 1 in 1000 in a game. That tactics is already a popular one. In more rare tactics, the chance of seeing it will be less than 1 in 5000 or something and your chance of improving rating is less than 1 per each position you mastered.

However if you learn tactics these way, the chance of improving your rating is more than 5 to 10 per each tactic you learn.

Learn as a category, Category 1,overloaded piece. White to play.

If you think that white should play Rxf7 in less than 5 secs, your rating will be increased a lot cos you will see the black rook in f7 is overloading to protect f7 and a8 squares. You have more than 10% chance of seeing overloaded piece in every game.

Tactics category 2, If your piece is attacked, attack his piece back. Black to move  play d4.

In this position as black , Rather than running your knight, think to attack back his piece as alternative option (Black will not lose a pawn by playing d4, cos in next two moves black pawn can do cxd2 check  in depth  3).If you can see d5! in less than 10 sec, your rating will be improved another 5-10. Why ? You will encounter similar positions everyday more than 10-50% chance in every game. One of your 15 pieces will be attack. You have lots of options as category, if your opponent attack your pawn, run your pawn, attack his pawn back, protect your pawn or do something else, ( same principles apply up to queen). But you will need a few more deep checking positions cos you can end up even losing a piece in applying those tactics .
