Beginner's advice on time control

As the title would suggest i'm a beginner, but i find playing anything less than 30 min games is really tough time wise.

It just seems that clock skips a few minutes everytime it's my move!

I'm trying to play more 5min and 3 min games to help speed up my thought process and thus far the results have been terrible.

Other than keep going the same way i was wondering if more experienced players could give me advice or a few tips to help me manage my time better.

Thanks in advance.

Games played at 5 minute or faster speeds are supposed to be terrible. If you want to improve your game, play mostly slow games. Just use blitz for the occasional change of pace, or to try out new openings a few times or something.

Stick to long time controls until you become a better player.  Titled players in particular love blitz because they've memorized thousands of patterns and can almost instantly play most of their moves. The rest of us are pretty much just pushing wood. It's OK to play blitz if you're trying to learn a new opening and then analyze where you went wrong afterwards but except for that most experts advise staying away.  You just end up perfecting your mistakes and learning bad patterns that will have to be unlearned later.  Or maybe it's a generational thing and I'm just too old to think quickly. Cry
