Firstly, welcome to chess.com

If you go to the Site features page, it will show you everything you can do on this site.

If you look toward the top of the page, there is a long bar.. if you point at where it says "Learn" a drop down box appears, giving you the options of;

Chess Mentor
Chess Articles
Tactics Trainer
Chess Rules and Basics
Chessopedia

Each in its own right, a good place to start and a good source of information.

Also, if you point your mouse cursor to the top right of the screen to where it says "My Home" a drop down box will appear there.. If you click where it says

"Online Chess" it will take you to  a page where there are options on the right hand side, to "start a new game"  or "open seeks" [this is where you can view other members looking to start a game]

Good luck and enjoy chess.com

Kohai is spot on.  Learn what everything does, get a feel for the site, and start playing.  As you build up some experience you will become a better player.  After that you can look into more formal means of training if you decide to do so.
