I've seen Trump ads

Maybe you have ADHD (joking). I don't even notice ads unless I see them mentioned in a forum. You can pay for a membership to get rid of ads.

Maybe he wants to play a few more games to test out the site before he becomes a member. Oh, wait on, he has already played 7044 games over 5 years. Good old Josh(from his profile) or Steve or Alphonzio the 3rd, or whatever he wants to call himself, must be joking. Don't be such a cheapskate !

Pay your 2016 membership, then pay your 2015 membership, then pay your 2014 membership, then pay your 2013 membership and then pay your 2012 membership as a thank you to the site for allowing you to play and enjoy yourself during all those games over the last half decade !

Steve, my quick take on the matter is that your ability to focus and to concentrate is a major hindrance.   It likely affects other apects of your life.   I base this diagnosis partly on your atrocious, likely unintentional, use of homophones.

Shake yourself and come correct.

Well that's exactly it isn't it! It is affecting other apects of my life. The ads are a major influence for me. That is what I'm trying to say.

No, it's you. Simply playing a lot doesn't mean you'll improve a lot.

Then shell out the $5 for a premium membership. Or just use AdBlock. Or do neither and continue to use ads an an excuse. Whatever.

Hello, my name is steve.

For some time I’ve been playing and learning chess; A little pawn push here, and little checky matey there. I love the game, and I love being better than other people at it. My skills have grown and morphed to because much better than many 1200 level players! This is why it is concerning to me when I notice an obstacle between me and becoming a grand master; between success and failure, hope and despair, winning chess games and losing chess game. I will explain more and the obstacle shortly.

Advertising is a part of culture, and it becomes a part of us. Many years ago humanity made decisions based on a number of things, and one of the primary things was influence; situation influence, social influence, and if you follow certain branches of thinking: metaphysical influence. Nowadays these influences come from ads and it affects us.

Chess.com is wonderful because it is free, and it is free because there are ads. A more direct way to say this would be: chess.com is wonderful because it has ads. But this direct use of language suddenly reveals something in my heart that has been buried for a while. My heart is torn between accepting the generosity if the website, and playing mind controlled chess.

I have noticed that chess.com's ads have been affecting the way I think, and intern affecting my chess. If an ad pops up about a car someone is trying to sell, I’m not playing chess anymore; I’m playing "moving peace’s around on the board while democracy performs brain surgery threw the power of influence." This is why Im not improving at chess.  What should I do?

LOL !

You are becoming an AD ADDICT.

It is better than chess addict.

I sympathize with and relate to your problem. I think I have a solution, though, and it uses the opposite approach that intuition might suggest.

You enter a game expecting to play chess, and it's the sudden appearance of the ad that distracts you, right? Next time you enter a game, tell yourself that you're there to watch colorful ads. Anticipate the ads. Look forward to being engulfed in consumerist mana. Then, when you finally commit, suddenly you will notice a prominent and very distracting chess game! Since it has your attention, you make a move, and look away, trying again to enjoy the vast array of goods and services on the market. But no; just as soon as you do, your opponent moves! You quickly make another move, but it happens again. And again. Try as you might, you can't focus on the ads, just chess.

It's all in learning how to beat one's mind at its own games. You can beat this. i believe in you.

Well, to start, you could place a sheet of paper over the ad if you are that influenced by it. Second of all, it's not like ads have some magical power of influence that will control your brain. I took a persuasive communications class this last semester at my university and the textbook authors were fully convinced that people have brains and aren't programmable robots. Sure, persuasion has power, but it's not like you can control people with the snap of a finger and get them to act like Captain Kirk in Star Trek TOS (When he acted like a horse). There is something called Agenda Setting Theory though and that is what you're talking about. You see, many studies have analyzed the media's influence of thought and found that the media is very good at telling people what to think about, but not what to think. So don't worry that you're becoming uncontrollably brainwashed. the media only has as much control as what you give them. you seem like a smart guy, so just ignore the ads and change your attitude toward them.
