Being First on Daily Puzzle

Does anybody else find it annoying when you scroll down to read the comments of others for the daily puzzle only to find, the majority of the time, "first" being the, well, first comment?

What is this obsession with a small amount of members to be first, especially without contributing anything to the puzzle solution? Do they just sit at computer hitting refresh waiting for the puzzle to change over so that they may be first?

Perhaps some of you "first" posters can shed some light on this.

RyanMK

first!!

jk, you had to know someone would do that. I also don't get those people, but they can do what they want. If they want to stay up the entire night so they can make the first post, more power to them.

PETEJOZ

Second.

According to the preliminary results of this entirely unrepresentative survey ... http://www.chess.com/forum/view/community/tally-forum-annoyances, such inane comments are the most annoying aspect of member contributions.

I also find it extremely annoying, it's old... perhaps funny the first time but who CARES who is first now?  Time zones have a lot to do with who is likely to be first anyway, I think when the puzzles change it's 5am here.

I disagree with Ryan, people can't do what they want here, there are rules governing the general running of the site and I consider the "first" etc comments to be spam since it interferes with the main purpose of posting comments under the puzzle.

 good one.

It's a common practice of the younger generation -- I first noticed it on the World of Warcraft forums, in response to Dev Team announcements.  The idea seems to be that by making one of the first responses to a post that will be seen by many, you ensure that your post will be viewed by many people as well.

Originally, it was used as a placeholder of sorts -- you would reply with a simple "first" to get your response right at the top, and then go back and edit that post with what you actually had to say.  It's actually rather clever for that purpose -- in a forum with hundreds of thousands of readers, by the time you put together a thoughtful response, you're going to be buried under the noise.  If you have something that you feel is important to say, you're going to get a lot more attention on Page 1 than Page 10.

Over time, though, that intent got lost, and it just became a cheap thrill to see your name up there at the top -- even if all you're saying is that you have nothing to say.  It is kind of annoying.

Not only "first" is the problem. "easy", "bad puzzle" etc.
Daily puzzle comments are depressing and irritating, where ignorance reigns

perp124

I bet they don't even do the puzzle.  They just type "first".

domdare

I think they type first because it's the only time they'll be the first in anything.

ADK

It doesn't really bother me... In fact, I think it has become somewhat of a daily contest to see who can stay up until 12:00 to post "First!".Wink

I think I will calculate the ratings on the players who post, "first" regardless of if it is true.

My hypothesis is that they will be lower rated players as I believe higher rated players play out their competitiveness over the board.

Once I have at least 30 samples or so, I should be able to report some stuff.

I will post here for anyone who is interested.

Do the puzzles get saved and people are able to track their "accomplishments"? Or do they just get deleted and there is nothing to show for it the next day?

joetheplumber

How about locking the daily puzzle thread after the puzzle is posted. Problem solved.

sebas4life

We can't discuss politics and religion here, because you will get a ban. These discussions can be very enlighting. Saying first/second/third, doesn't enlighten me in any way, and is therefore extremely annoying. This should be banned instead of discussions about religion or politics.

perp124

It would be nice if there was a way to display everyone who attempts the puzzle, and if they solved it, or not.  You know.  Your name with a Pass or Fail after it.

EnoneBlue

Whats the big deal? I've never posted in under the puzzles but I think it make this site a little more fun and unique. its nothing to be mad about

cuendillar wrote: That's a bad idea. In all but the very simplest puzzles there are alternative defenses, odd-looking moves or seemingly plausible attacking alternatives. The forum do serve a purpose in that more experienced tacticians can answer questions about those lines and post relevant and helpful analysis. A much better solution, though one that does require extra work, is to have "daily puzzle-moderator" with the only purpose of deleting pointless comments. His policy ought to be to give the benefit of doubt to all cases with the least uncertainty not to offend someone who actually tried to contribute.

PUZZLE: ... should white move the second pawn or the first?

RESPONDER: First.
