Best book for amateurs?

I thought of ordering "my system" by nimzovich, but before I do that I want to get your opinions. I'm still an amateur but I have decided to take chess seriously, I want to make myself proud:-). So what do you think about this book and I read somewhere that there are many publishers of this, and pandolfini's ultimate guide to chess was my first option but I think it's too soon. So are there any other books, what's your advice?

Sry I posted this in the wrong section of the forum.

Take a look at Coach Heisman's recommendations:

You could also do a "search forums" for oh, maybe, best book for amateurs:

http://www.chess.com/forum/search?keyword=best+book+for+amateurs

A search for "best beginner's book" would probably return better posts, but I'll leave that to you. Wink

Thx baddogno, I actually saw heismans recommendations earlier and I decided to read "complete idiots guide to chess" first and I'm confused about what to read after this.

@defencefox, "amateurs mind" or "my system", maybe both? :-)

Depends on exactly how new you are and what you wish to focus on. There is of course the "Chess For Dummies" book and "Chess for Everyone", but after that you kind of start getting into specific learning areas.
