Is being in the lower 1400 -1500 rating the most fun ? I worry that learning more about openings and getting a study plan will make my chess better but less fun.

Depends on if you enjoy the competition or not knowing what's going to happen on every game more. Higher rating will give you tougher competition but you'll understand games better and will have more of an idea what's going on in them. It's not bad to hang back if you like it better but if you play enough you will probably improve by "accident"

I can see improving to a certain level by eliminating blunders and just getting better but the next step is study plan time, learning openings etc. If you do these things and get better what happens to RL chess. You just beat most people, no one wants to play with you. At least now most people I play IRL are not even rated and would be 1500 at best.
