'1. e4, best by test.' - Bobby Fischer
Best first move for the white.
Personally, the kings Indian is the best opening ever played, so I prefer and mostly play Nf3 as my first move which becomes the kings Indian attack. If you play e4, d4, or c4, they are also great choices depending on your playing style. However, the opening you play has to have a motive with a sequence of moves to gain a positional advantage. To keep it simple, the move order with Nf3, g3, Bg2 can be played repeatedly whereas with e4 or d4, you encounter different situations like the Caro kann, Sicilian, French, or even the Englund gambit. Therefore with e4 or d4 openings you have to be flexible whereas with offbeat openings like Nf3, c4, or even f4, which opponents aren’t prepared for, you can play repetitively regardless of their responses.
if you want a interessting game, you should play d4 but if you want to play somethign popular well just play e4.
