Hi, I'm a complete beginner of Chess, I know all the rules and whatnot, but I have no grasp of tactics, opening, strategy, positional advantage, etc... So I'm hoping someone could direct me to the best resources for someone just starting out with chess. I'd also like to know what kind of stuff I should work on for the greatest improvement. I'm guessing learning tactics should be the number one thing?

Yeah, mastering tactics is most important. For learning other things, Read articles, watch some videos, play alot and you will slowly become a good chess player.

Do you know any good websites, where all the important tactics are described?

The best way to learn tactics is by using a tactics trainer such as the one on this site. The one I like best is at www.chesstempo.com. Also I use a solitaire chess program to learn openings and positional chess. Guess The Move is a very good solitaire chess program at https://sites.google.com/site/fredm . The videos on this site and on YouTube are also very helpful. It also helps to play otb chess with live opponents so get out of the house and go to a chess club.

Yeah, chess tempo is also good but you can also try http://www.chessgym.net/ this site also have good exercises and nice interface.

It really can only come from practice and remembering what you did wrong.

I'm not much higher rated, but Dan Heisman's Novice Nook articles have been helping me greatly.  They're fantastic.  Check them out...http://danheisman.home.comcast.net/~danheisman/Articles/subject.htm

I recommend reading Reassess Your Chess by Silman.  His discussion of the imbalances really helps to give an understanding of the position.  It takes you beyond the "if I move here, then he can move there" approach to making moves.  Good luck and welcome!

Can you tell me which are main differences between chesstempo and chess tactic on chess.com? I'm interested in chesstempo but don't know is there any significant advantage solving tactic there.

1) Master the elements and the essential endgames that you must know

2) Go over endgame studies (alot of them)

You'll learn a hell of alot improve your creativity and resoursefulness at the board studying them will keep your tactics very sharp. Endgame studies can be very beautiful and deep it's hard to pull away I can spend 2 or 3 hours going over some studies when I put the board away I'm still thinking about the studies on the bus, on errands, shopping.
