Best way to study tactics?

What is the best way to study tactics? Should I focus on a few a day, or work on as many as I have time for? Must they be theme orientated like just forks or discovered checks or random? What have you guys found more effective for you?

My tactic is to do some (3-10) tactics a day, no matter which they are. Discovered check, unsound sacrifice, back rank mate... I try to make all tactics here and then maybe some on Chess Tempo.

For me, the problem/main difference between tactics and real game is, that in real game you don't know if you can win something or not, at tactics you almost every time win something! :)

Yes right now I do the three free daily tactical puzzles here on Chess.com, and I do some, maybe average of ten, on Chesstempo.com daily too. I also got my tactical theme puzzle book out last night and will begin to use that to focus on specific tactical themes, one every week. Possibly I might ask for a paid membership here at Chess.com for Christmas, then I can focus on doing more with the tactical trainer on Chess.com daily.

Keep in mind though, when you are playing a game and see the progression of the pieces, you normally know if you should be looking for a mate, or winning an exchange, or even perhaps if you should take a hanging piece. Also when doing tactics puzzles, it is a matter of simply making a few moves to defend. Those types of puzzles can trow you off, if you have the mentality that, you are always going to win a better offensive position or gain something in terms of material...
