Best way to train your tactics sense.

In our games we have all made two types tactical mistakes, that both stem from a failing tactics sense (or tactics entennae):
1. There was a tactic that we didn't see
2. We thought there was a tactic where there actually wasn't and we make a move that put's us in a worse position because of some oversight.

This is because in-game, there is no-one to point out to you (except your own sense of tactics of course) that there is or isn't a tactic in the current position. Depending on the time-control and skill level, this happens not very often; a handfull of times per game at most; and once every few games at least. And that's not very often if I would like to train/improve specifically this tactical sense.

One way to improve on this is of course to practice tactics. The one limitation I find in this is that, unlike the in-game situation, with each position that is presented you actually know there is a tactic there. That makes the mindset of solving tactics fundamentally different than that during the in-game situation.

What to me would be the ultimat tactics trainer is one where I'm presented half of the time (randomly of course) with positions that seem to have a tactic, but actually don't and half of the time with actual tactics. In order to 'solve' such a position, you either make a move (in case you think there is an actual tactic in the position) or you press a button "not a tactic" (in case you think there's no tactic there). Getting it wrong here would be making the wrong move or pressing the "not a tactic" butten when there actually was a tactic.

I would argue that this is the best way to train your tactics sense. What do you think on this? Could this be an improvement on the current way we practice online tactics?

You are absolutely correct, and the solution you have presented is correct too, and I have a practical application of your solution, take games of tactical players, ( alekhine, chigorin, tal, fisher, etc...) and for each ply, just like you said, choose between the two,
" there is a tactic and this is it" and " there is no tactic" this would make this method possible, unless someone makes a tactics trainer like you said, but I really think this is a great method even if done manually by ourselves.

Yes I've thought about this before and I think somone should do a course on "how to set up tactics" rather than them magically appearing like they do in puzzles?

I agree with you too, that's the best way to do it.

Great to hear your feedback. Very happy to hear that this makes sense to others than myself. Not expecting too much from chess.com here (since I know they are busy on all kinds of other cool chess related features), but I sincerely hope to one day see this implemented somewhere. If anyone would know of this actually existing I would love to hear from them. I wonder if this could actually be implemented in chessable, somehow?

Your idea is a good one. I also recommend the book "Tune Your Chess Tactics Antenna" by Emmanuel Neiman. It identifies seven "signals" that tell you that there may be a tactic on the board, such as king position, alignment of two pieces, overloaded defender, etc. When evaluating a position I try to run through the seven signals in my mind to see if there's a tactic I could play.

Whole games should be part of your regular training.

There are several excellent books that feature a combination of tactical and positional exercises.
Lev Alburt, Chess Training Pocket Book and Chess Training Pocket Book II
Thomas Engqvist, 300 Most Important Chess Positions
Rashid Ziyatdinov, GM-RAM

Yeah I guess you are right. Another idea is that you just go for positional play instead of tactical play in positions with no tactics. I’m curious whether there is a site that have the idea for the first comment, or the idea I wrote.

ABC:  Always Be Closing.

positional play is just getting in position to deliver a blow;  the end result is always material gain or mate.
