Ratings dont matter !

I'm seriously tired of hearing this thing over and over and over again from different people, just to catch them later on their own lie.

Trust me rating do matter! Even online !

Maybe they ONLY don't matter for someone who just started playing chess and played like 10, 20 games and having a rating 300-500 , then yes they don't matter to them, because they simply don't understand a thing and just dont care.

People often tell lies like most popular as well being : $$$ don't matter, you can't have happiness, my soul is rich bla bla bla ..... BUT end of the day when you have to pay bills SUDDENLY it becomes matter lmao.

I'm an honest person and rating matter very much ! Would you rather have online 3000 rating in blitz (when some people say online ratings dont mean anything, lol on them) or 1000 rating and don't care about rating exactly!

When someone says ratings don't matter, they are trying to come up with excuse why they can't be successful, same with money, your appearance etc. ..... just excuses all around .

Ratings are a good measure of performance and improvement, but if someone is enjoying the game and process, rating is ultimately of secondary importance. Yes, it's nice to have a good rating, but it's not the end of the world if someone doesn't have X rating

StormCentre3

The kicker is the premise a rating is indicative of knowledge regarding a given subject matter.

I think people say ratings don't matter to remove the rating from desire to improve. Like you should want to improve in chess because it's fun for you and you like the game, not to get a higher rating if that makes sense.

Ratings only matter to those to whom they matter to.  I have been playing chess off and on for 30+ years and have a blitz rating of 550 - 700 and I don't care.  Used to have a rating of 1700 - 1800 and didn't care much then either.  I am happy in life, so such shallow matters do not bother me, though I will say there is an inverse relation to the attractiveness of of ones significant other(s) vs. chess proficiency.  That said, my rating still trends downwards and that is fine with me.

Achieving a high rating requires talent but also demands a lot of work, learning and practice. If someone doesn't choose to invest that much effort, or doesn't have that much free time to reach their highest level but instead enjoys playing regularly at a local club and/or an occaisional tournament, or spending an idle hour playing online, so what? To such people ratings do NOT matter that much an they are probably happier in their chess lives than those who judge themselves (and others) mainly on the basis of ratings.

so true

Batman2508

wait HOLD UP! does that mean I'm talented? cause I'm 1900+ blitz?

Hedgehog1963

Rating doesn't matter unless you are weak enough to care about it.

Wait . Did you seriously come down to sub 1000 from 1700s ?

vantangler

Yes I did. I was on my chess team in HS (i did ok) and really got back into chess when I got a computer in my 20s... I started off with 10min games and worked my way upwards toward what I thought were good players (ranging between 1600 - 1900 on FICS ( i hope is didn't date myself there), and ended up on the upper end of 1700s.  that was about 10 years ago. from then onward, I started my career in a professional field, and started playing blitz games, with 5 min time controls being my fav.  needless to say, my skills have atrophied into that of a barley functional potato.  I will say though, that i do enjoy an exiting CM against a 500- 700 player just as much as a laborious CM against a 1700-1800 player.  Also an a fringe bonus, i never get to endgame at this level so i don't need to deal with that silliness anymore either.  Just as fun or more IMHO.

Well I wasn't aware of his rating.  But thanks for proving my point: The weakness is within your the personality not your gameplay.

I remember attending a GM lecture several years ago, The subject of ratings came up and the Grandmaster said, "You shouldn't worry about your rating. You should worry about playing good chess. If you play good chess, your rating will take care of itself."

Ratings also are good measure of your inner strength(who you are as a person, weak and vulnerable or strong and motivated) and ratings are not very important in life I do agree, but it shows and translates to everyday life who you are as a person.

Some people like to fight , conquer in life and some have similar mentality with ratimg in real life ,  " I have a job , I'm cleaning toilets all my life, that's ok as long as I enjoy doing tho" .

KGambit01

"I'm an honest person" Of those 2 sentences by the OP, at least one is a lie. If I gave him the 3000 blitz rating he craves, what could he do with it? Nothing. So it doesn't matter. So he isn't honest.

Which means it's still important to them , they just afraid to admit it.
