A 1600 would already know some openings and lines and may only start faltering at around the 12 - 14 moves against a Super GM.
Bill Gates rating?

His practice level looks like it could be between 800 and 1000 from an up standpoint. I have played 800s that see the one move threats better than this game so i give him the benefit of the doubt to be between 800 and 1000.

I see, he is not giving enough relative to his wealth in your eyes? At least the good lord has punished him by ensuring he sucks at chess.
@strange mover- I am sorry (truly) to say that you don’t see what I am saying. But while we are praising great men (a popular pastime) do consider: NYT, 10/12/19, “Bill Gates Met With Jeffrey Epstein Many Times, Despite His Past”

I don't really want to get into it with you stephen to be honest. We all know what happens...You make some points, I make some points, both our opinions are not swayed an inch and then it's over and it was all for nothing. I don't really have strong opinions on Bill Gates and his life choices.
Strangemover- thanks. Honestly, me neither. I was actually just making a bit of a joke- though I would rely on the immortal words of Joe Strummer: “I don’t want to hear about what the rich are doing. I don’t want to go to where the rich are going”. That second line could be an existential statement!

Bill gates doesn't play much chess because he was involved in computer science and then setting up a business and chatting to them.
He knows the basic rules.
But doesn't have a go to opening line or much foresight from the info available
Looking at the way Bill Gates played in that game there are signs that he is probably got a rating of around 1200-1300. I know it is easy to make errors when under time pressure and against the worlds best player (we all would) but I am player with around 1600 rating on this site and I would always follow a common opening line for the first six-seven moves just to get some kind of neat structure to use against Carlson (before he destroys me in 20 or so moves!).
Gates third move Bd3 makes absolutely no sense to me, blocking off his "d" pawn and offering nothing. This is the kind of move that would make me think I was in for an easy game as black, let alone the world champion! In general his opening just looks like a complete mess.
I know some players with higher ratings with me could probably make a case that Gates opening could in theory work, but the reality is that he would have to be a much higher rated to player to make it work.
I agree, Bd3 ...very suspicious. you could also tell this from the grin on Magnus he was thinking at that moment "1600 hmm ? very suspicious"
