Blitz and Bullet are not chess

I sort of agree. But in the long run, playing lotz of Blitz game will eventually make you improve (if you're thinking right at least).

Doing anything chess-related for a long time will probably result in some imrpovement. However, I believe bullet chess is one of the least effective ways, bringing the least improvement for a unit of time. Blitz helps in pattern recognition, but not much else, as it's very "shallow chess".

On the other hand, chess is about having fun for the most of us. I don't play blitz because the stress makes me frustrated, I do things I enjoy (annotated games, tactics, long games) instead. But if blitz makes one happy, playing blitz is the way to go.

Unless you have a really high rating and fast mind, blitz and bullet are not chess at all. .....  Moving pieces just to see who can move faster is kind of childish, this make chess ugly. I suggest chess.com forbid those players whose rating lower than 2200 playing blitz or bullet.

 a) there's nothing wrong with 'ugly' chess, (but I agree, the 'slow witted' amongst us are unlikely to enjoy bullet and blitz chess)

b) forbidding lower rated players from playing would stop creating the over 2200 players who were lower rated but have learned and improved to be able to play at that level of chess

Who gets to decide what chess is or isn't? Is Chess 960 chess? Is it perhaps MORE akin to "real chess" than correspondence chess or long time controls where people just play book openings and don't rely on their own strategies per se?

Though my rating doesn't reflect it and I need to dedicate a lot more time to it, I feel I am much better at bullet than regular chess. I am impatient and like to make a lot of aggressive moves and sacrifices; it is just my style of play. It may mean I'm not a real chessplayer, but whether the chess I'm playing is "real" or not, I love it and enjoy it much more than "standard chess." In fact, I probably wouldn't play here if it weren't for offering Bullet.

I personally play almost exclusive bullet chess. For me it does get very frustrating when i run into someone who is making the dumbest moves possible just to try to win on time and im stuck trying to figure out what legitimate move to make off of that so i hate those players and that is not chess moving 1 piece back and forth 8 times. Or someone only moving pawns all over the board just to try to jam you up where you waste time trying to figure out where to move. But i have found that Bullet chess gives me the ability to play 100s of games in a very short period of time so that i can be constantly analyzing and studying the games to get better. I prefer blitz chess due to the ability to think but right now im working on solidifying my opennings so i have a great foundation for myself when i start playing more blitz games

Playing fast chess isnt likely to improve your slow/classic game . Playing slow/classic games is likely to improve your fast chess though. In the end its all about what you are tryng to get better at ?  I find that too much blitz/bullet actually hurts my slow/classic play.

Yes sir but depending on what kind of memory you have you can vastly improve by playing dozens of fast games instead of only 3-4 10 or more minute games. Of course you run into those who want to play dumb to win on time but mostly you encounter people who really try to play legitimately

I'm now starting to improve my Blitz rating.... 10 mins per side works for me. I finish most games by mating before the time runs out... I don't see any problem with Blitz

The only reason I started playing blitz again is because nobody wants to plaly me at longer games. I prefer the longer games though (like 30|15).

Two words ‘’critical thinking’’.. I love playing bullet because it absolutely pushes your mind to the limit. I know that everyone has there own style and game but bullet chess is still chess in every aspect.. How is putting a time limit on a game of chess make it less of a game?

tirano

bullet is chess, a real one, for smart and speed thinkers but the full beauty of game is lost. chess game of 1 hour is not real chess. its more using other people experience than your own thinking. it is just a game everyone chooses what he wants or likes.

mateologist

Bullet and blitz are really pattern recognition chess until you run into the PAWN-STORMERS  with their super high ratings , On another site i play on they have turned it into an art which makes it very difficult for conventional players. they develope behind that pawn-storm with amazing speed and unconventional attacks. Specialized chess is a better name for it because they violate all opening principles, but when you play these guys in that short time frame  GOOD-LUCK !!

Though bullet chess more or less resembles crash up derby,I like blitz in that it helps me make quicker decisions, which helps me in my 30 minute game.Besides I think a 10 minute game more or less preserves the finer point of chess, theres still room for long term strategy and on yout feet tactics.I just have to slow myself down after the first 4 to 10 moves.Undoubtbly playing the 1,3,5 and 10 minute helps me recognize sitiuations quicker.

Think baseball.Let's play speed baseball: No walk to the mound by either manager or catcher, no throw to the bases unless the runner is running...,no intentional walks, just put the man on first. It's a different game.

Rich_Robinson

The purpose of Blitz games is to test your recognition of positional ideas and tactics. If you continue to lose Blitz games, then you don't understand what you are seeing ...

Mc_Borg

Not all of us have the time or patience to play longer games. I don't want to stare at a screen for 3-5 minutes waiting for a person to make a move. I play for entertainment as well as the challenge, and having to wait so long for someone to move takes all the fun out of it for me.

Callous

I also wouldn't consider bullet to be real chess. Blitz is okay, although the time restriction makes me worse.

I prefer correspondence and 30 minute live chess.

NimzoRoy

So what's your point? Apparently people who play bullet and blitz want to do so regardless of what anyone else things.

Ryan390

I don't think bullet or speed chess is the true essence of chess, but still many people play it so let them be.

I generally spend at least an hour and half against a decent human opponent, anything less will probably result in me making nothing close to the best move.

I'd rather play one good game, which I know I put everything into, made the best move at least 40% of the time, and have a decent game at the end to analyse and learn from. The longer you spend calculating your position and going through the variations during a game, the more you will stretch your mind.

As Josh Waitzkin put it: Growth comes from the point of resistance.

BULLET CHESS STINKS

Especially because time lag issues continually force me to lose on time.

I'm done with bullet chess. It's not real chess.

wouldnt say it stinks but played a game just where I had a comfy position lost on time due to lag, playing speed chess on here can be counter productive to those of us that wanna play longer format tournament chess to improve
