Blitz chess - pure garbage????

Every game I spend getting winning positions and then getting flagged. Like, literally, every single game, thats what happens. Either that or I win all of my opponents pieces and then i blunder my queen because I have 2 seconds left.

This game mode is utterly stupid -- I've played over 1000 blitz games and still cannot get the hang of it. Everybody who enjoys playing blitz, I don't know how

It's another style of play

Most coaches recommend that newcomers NOT play blitz. Play slower time controls. Learn the basics. Dont play blitz until you have learned general opening and middlegame principles so that they become automatic in your play.

I feel I'm decent enough in slower time controls to play blitz though, I'm not a complete beginner. (2000 rapid). Its just that in blitz I'm stuck at like 1500-1600 because I get flagged every game in completely winning positions

I've seen you fairly active in the forums and on chess.com for a few years, so you are probably "advanced enough" to play blitz proficiently.

I notice you also play bullet. Sometimes when kind of between time controls, it can be a struggle. Some people focus on classic chess in-person and sometimes play blitz, but then they struggle with rapid because it feels rushed compared to their classical games, yet they also can't rely on some tricks which works for them in blitz.

That was the context behind this famous Dubov interview:

What I'd recommend for you is to treat the time control you struggle with (in your case blitz) as the time control just faster than this (in your case bullet), but then give yourself extra thinking time when needed. In other words, try treating blitz like you do bullet chess, but then give yourself a little extra time to double check your moves, or a bit longer to calculate when needed.

If you are consistently getting winning positions and blowing it (I often have the same in my games and it's not a feeling; I have statistics from my game history to confirm I usually am winning before blowing it), then I recommend looking at the cause of why you lost it. If time pressure, then learn to move more quickly up until that point, or if you were winning earlier, then improve calculation or find other ways of converting more efficiently, so the game gets shut out earlier. It really depends on your personal game and how/why you reached the position you did before blowing the win.

The guy has played over 10000 games in the last 3 years and has a rating of 2000 in rapid. Is that a newcomer in your book?

It’s not your fault, sandbagging is a huge problem with blitz games

That’s why I hate playing blitz
Avatar of analist76bis

grr...how many games you have to hate something?

Very bad for learning, very good for having fun (or earning a few bucks if you are a strong titled player).

Forget about your rating- you can keep playing blitz to have fun, and somehow improve your reflexes. Just avoid playing half or fully drunk, like I usually do...

Avatar of analist76bis

I use bullet for this.... my main games are in 3+0

Avatar of analist76bis

you are a liitle older than me .. your reflex are dropped.. I really hope I can keep mines...

you can learn chess by playing blitz bullet style but this is another way of learning chess... brainless pumpkin shooter style. to respect the antics idea who created chess. the idea of thinking before than moving after. they wanted to educate people but they were wise of the gap so they threw chess to india mindless people. the brain needs 5 minutes to 30 to think a complicated position according to russian school and 1 minute to 5 to reflect something that you know well according to some other source. if you go faster than that thats another way of playing chess!!

Avatar of analist76bis

You CANNOT learn chess by playing. Point. You learn by training... analyses .. training...

By playing you put in practice what you trained.

if you want to descover every tactics, analyse position, combinatorics by yourself...you will need to have 200 years
