Blitz Chess: Really Chess?

ESTRAGON

"...Blitz is fun and exciting, turning the pensive nature of the game on its head.  Enjoy it for what it is.  Why argue philosophy - it's a game.  It is supposed to be fun, so have it!"

And its a good refresher after a twenty year absence.

Even if I lose just about all the time, I can see the blunder, or save and analyse the game later...

I just don't find the time I had in my youth for serious study...

So Blitz chess is only in my opinion real chess for the higher ranking players.  Like above 1800 or so.  Most 1800 players know the book lines of their opening repertoire really well so they can play at high speeds as the moves can be memorized and played out.

I read a post by Jermey Silmans saying that he suggested that blitz chess was a good way to learn patterns fast.  He then explained that a study was done and on Blitz games and with in the study of Blitz players their chess game actually got worse.

Although Blitz can be a big adrenaline rush, it is not in your advantage to play these types of games if you are begginging player.

But if you like the rush of Blitz i would suggest learning lots of Gambit lines as they can be fun.

This statement is correct...beginners should not play blitz untill they have a solid foundation in chess..it ruins the otb play to just clickity click and look at clock for win ..for your own test just get a kid to play speed chess and u will c for urself..it ruins the kids chess play ...

I have played blitz about an hour a day for the past two years. And when I mean blitz, I mean 1 minute games.. I have see some very amazing players that do things in a minute most average to above average players couldn't think of in an hour. Blitz chess has helped me learn openings, make much better moves and look for traps and forks. I can see the board in a different light now. One downside is the that I am inpatient now when I play an untimed game. I already know your opening and what how I am going to respond up intil midgame. So why does a player take 20 minutes to move 5 pieces? That annoys me. I'm like, come on, I know your gonna move here there or there, then I am going to go here then there then take that piece etc etc. Blitz is my favorite and if your good at blitz, then how is it possible your not good at regular chess?

Your last statement is wrong..wrong and not accuarate...any tournament player will laugh at your logic ..[but] if u ever want to get serious with chess dont play blitz..it ruins your OTB play slow play...this is actually a good argument because ..Nakamura top super GM but loves blitz and is real good at both...beginners should not play blitz..

Deranged

HE MEANS BULLET NOT BLITZ!

Okay, I made a mistake in defining my terms. I originally used the word "blitz" as an overall work for "speed". What I usually play is "bullet" chess and that's the word I should have used. I've been referring to "bullet" chess when I used words like "speed" chess or "blitz" chess. Sorry for the confusion.

When I play "speed" chess on a real board with friends I usually have an hourglass timer and set it for 30 seconds per side. This makes for pretty fast play but you can take a little longer for a couple of moves if you want.

I like bullet chess on chess.com for the adrenaline rush and because i can play a quick game here and there. I have a long way to go where chess is concerned and I appreciate all the comments and perspectives posted here (even the ones about all-day breakfast).
