Blitz losses

So you outplay your opponent and are in a better position... your listening to music, have the tv on and are chatting on msn.  You end up losing on time or playing a stupid move losing you the game.

The fact that you lost gets you down but the fact you outplayed your opponent makes you happy. Sometimes its hard to feel happy about your play when you lose so many blitz games dispite playing great and having a better position. Other times you get lucky, win lots but arent playing that well.

Are you able to balance the assessment of your play regardless of the end result? In my opinion sometimes its hard to do without asking yourself too many ''what if'' or ''on one hand'' kind of questions. How do you cope with analyzing your progress? Do you soley use your rating as a reflection of how good you are?

Heres an example. People who want to lose weight. They weight themselves and when they lose pounds they are happy. They go and do exercise the next week but find they have gained weight. Ok, they feel crappy now but dont understand that perhaps the previous week they lost alot of water and the present week they gained some muscle from their new found healthy lifestyle. Eventually they give up exercise because it all becomes too much even tho they were actually on the right track to sucess. Any thought anyone or am i out there on my own?!

(for the record, i aint a chubby lad trying to become a GM Cool)

Yeah, I learn a lot from losses, but playing makes me much better.  Just stick too it and the skill will come with practice.

Of course rating correlates somewhat with how good you actually are.  But, I never assess "how good I am" at any time.  I assess which part of my game needs improvement and work on that.  As I improve in those aspects my rating normally goes down for a short while and then takes a large leap.
