Blocked from Posting on Resigning

Hmmm... in a forum post on resigning, I posted that I did not mind if my *opponent* didn't resign, but not that I don't resign myself.  And yet this apparently put me in the OP's bad books such that he blocked me.  This in itself is of no consequence, except that now I can't participate in the discussion any longer!  I wish people would read a little more carefully...

"I did not mind if my *opponent* didn't resign, but not that I don't resign myself."

Perhaps you were blocked for having too many "NOTs". Do you mean:

"I did not mind if my *opponent* didn't resign, but that I don't resign myself." ?

onosson

Ha!  Good point... here's what I posted on that other forum:

"I never mind when an opponent does not resign - fighting out such battles to the finish has improved my endgame skills tremendously!"

Only one "not" in there.

They can't join your open seeks, you won't be auto paired with them in seeks, they can't join your tournaments, and theres probably a few more I'm missing as well." Where was that post about just blocking people from playing you (because they have an 'unfortunate' attitude about resigning), but not blocking them from talking to you?

wombadom

A person should resign when THEY think they should, not when SOMEBODY ELSE thinks they should. Sometimes you know your lost but want a lesson in just how to win that won game.

onosson

Perhaps the discussion has been done to death already, anyways.  My vote: I resign when I see no point in continuing to play myself, but I enjoy playing out games even where I've clearly won - if I have to checkmate the other player's lone king with a queen and rook, I just try and see if I can do it in as few moves as possible.  I know I haven't perfected the endgame, and still need practice.

I got blocked from that thread too. It's unimportant, pretty much like the thread's topic which was covered pretty quickly. Perhaps the OP thought the thread was dragging on uselessly.

onosson

You're right, it was all covered and there's nothing more to say really... it just annoys me when something like that happens and I don't know why - but this is the internet, so I should be used to that by now!

onosson

The OP had said that he was blocking everyone who said they "never resign", or something to that effect... I'm not sure if you posted something like that, but I know I certainly didn't!

onosson

Apparently he didn't want to ever play anyone who supports the concept of not resigning...

onosson

The guy who posted the forum I was talking about at the top of this thread... I can't remember his name.

tidi

Hi.I just want to wish everyone happy hannukah and merry christmas

Darkcloudy

I can see why he blocked you.Poor bloke didn't have a clue what that sentence meant with so many 'nots'.

onosson

Guess he didn't like my negativity! ;)

Sounds like a pretty sneaky strategem: lure out of the woodwork all of the people whose views you disagree with - then BLOCK 'EM!   Entrapment isn't frowned upon in this domain, isn't it?

There's still a place for SMART SANCTIONS i.e. just blocking people from playing you (challenging you, accepting your challenges, joining your tournaments, being placed in the same group as you in tournaments, being paired against you in Team Matches) but not from talking to you.

onosson

I agree with your point, artfizz... maybe chess.com will work on that in the future.

Samuel Beckett's play, 'Endgame' refers to the last part of a chess game, when there are very few pieces left. (The French title can be applied to games besides chess, and Beckett lamented the fact that there was no precise English equivalent). Beckett himself was known to be an avid chess player; the struggle of Hamm to accept the end can be compared to the refusal of novice players to admit defeat, whereas experts normally resign after a serious blunder or setback.

'...it's time it ended...and yet I hesitate, I hesitate to...to end.'

(Also, I've seen people, a pawn ahead, angry that I won't resign; that's different, they just don't like endgames Tongue out).

I was going to post this on the other thread, but figured I just get banned, hehe.

Didn't Beckett also write: Waiting for Godot (to move) ? Seems he must have done a fair amount of waiting.

What makes you confident you won't get banned from this one? Was it - or was it not -  Onosson who is quoted as saying: "Now, if you play straight with me you'll find me a considerate Topic Controller, but cross me and you'll find that under this playful boyish exterior beats the heart of a ruthless sadistic maniac."  http://homepage.eircom.net/%257Eodyssey/Quotes/Popular/TV/Blackadder.html

Caravaggio's a good friend of mine - however, Artfizz, you're pushing me towards the dark side!  Wink

Chess is like 'The Force': "it has a light side and a dark side and it holds the universe together."
