I thought Short admitted that it was a hoax?
Bobby Fischer on ICC

The article is dated September 18, 2001...
I am fully aware of that :) The thing is, there isn't info on this (real or fake) on the Internet, or I haven't found it.

I think it is true. It is impossible for any chess player to just quit the game. Plus I think Fischer is an eccentric genius. So there is a good chance that it is true.

Well to be true or not.. It change nothing that Bobby Fischer is the greatest chess player of all time :)

It was a computer engine, wasn't it?
There isn't much information on the subject. Everybody says it was a guy with an engine, but I haven't found conclusive proof so far. I don't think it was Fischer because of the openings this guy used. Fischer took Chess seriously and always treated his opponents with respect. The openings the engine used were basically mocking the opponent: look you're so bad at Chess I won't even bother with a decent opening.

I've seen that kind of opening only from engines so far, never from a (GM-strength) human player. So it all was just a joke, to exploit the nostalgia people still had and have for B. Fischer .
In our days, we would say someone "trolled" the ICC. :)

LOL he was one of the forerunners of trolling :) I feel bad for Nigel Short because this guy played him for a fool, but I think it happens to everyone at some point.
Nostalgia for Fischer? Nah, he's forgotten now! :) I am currently reading 2 books on him!

I don't get how you can use a computer engine like that in real time. My understanding it that there is a lag to evaluate with an engine. Please clarify. Thanks. RW
