Way off.

Kupov, I'm done arguing with you -- I've said what I have to say and your self-contradictory positions speak for themselves.

We are doing nothing to further the discussion on the original topic and out of respect for everyone else in this thread who wishes to discuss Bobby Fischer, I'm out.

Listen folks what you should remember is that these comments were made at a time when women were deemed as second class citizens. Bobby is being a tad naive which is a little excusable considering his age and stilted upbringing at that time. I seem to remember in his later years that he became good friends with one (if not all) of the remarkably talented Polgar sisters. Someone will no doubt correct me if i'm wrong.

Kasparov has been quoted saying the same type of language... he said he would give a pawn instead of a knight (like Fischer said).  Which was funny that he had to cheat to beat Judit Polgar.  Everyone knows about the famous Knight incident.

I'm starting to get tired of topics with the word "girl" or "women" in them.  Imagine if every third post was about your gender or your particular race.  ::yawn::

You have no idea.  lol.  I'm a black American.

Please dont take offense to this because none is intended.  But how are we as a people supposed to move past racism, and discrimination if we keep labeling ourselves?  Why cant we just be Americans?

Hah, I hope the irony in this statement is intentional....

What are you talking about?

She said imagine if every post was about gender or girl.  Clearly, there are a ton of news stories and reports about black this and black that in a negative light.

You seemed to have some sort of an issue.  You brought up a topic that was not at hand with this statement.

Now if you think that the way to end sexism or racism or any other ism is for the person to deny their cultural identity, I think that is an overly simplistic view that puts a bandaid on a problem that has a complex history.

The same with sexism.  We can't criticize Bobby without or Kasparov's views about women without marrying them to the cultural context of women and history.  The premise of your statement presupposes that labeling yourself black is something bad.  Just as if you are Jewish, Irish, or Italian, there is nothing wrong with a cultural identity.

The fact of the matter is that when Spassky won the world championship in 1969 from Petrosian he received less than $2000. as his "prize". Only with Fischer did the money at the top levels of chess become significant. To deny that Fischer worked towards this goal ( not only for himself but for chess at the top in general) is to live in a state of denial and/or hatred of Fischer.

I don't deny that Fischer worked towards this goal--but I do deny that he did so for "chess at the top in general."  Everything he did, he did only for himself, no one else.  If he was so intent upon improving the lot of top players, why did he bail out on $5 million in 1975?  Think of the strides the game would've made back then had that become a reality.

Kasparov himself said that Fischer is the "founder of professional chess": to say that "everything Fischer did, he did only for himself" flies in the face of the facts.

The Polgar's are really a poor example to rely on.  Given how they were "Trained" In their youth, it is little wonder they showed some ability in chess.

I dare say that anyone with a reasonable amount of intelligence, subjected to the same "Training" would yield similar results.
