"and he declined because he didn't use that shampoo."
That's probably more than you can say about a lot of people!

Fischer - it's an ongoing struggle keeping him balanced in one's mind. His chess is so good, and so "American" in its individual, self-taught way, that it's hard as a fellow American to not to adore his games and consider him the best of the best. Which I think he is.
BUT - you have to put up a big Berlin Wall around that, because anything outside the chess is depressing at best and abjectly horrible at worst. His life, his behavior, his racism, his mental illness, and his own pathetic endgame.
I've read a lot of anecdotes about Fischer post-1972, from everyone from Evans to Seirawan to Polgar, and lurking under all the warm memories is a tone of sad apologia - and an effort to try to explain away or at least tolerate just how terrible a human being he became. SO - the Berlin Wall stays up, and I focus only on the games, the games.
"You don't learn anything in school. It's just a waste of time. You lug around books and all and do homework. They give too much homework. You shouldn't be doing homework. Nobody's interested in it. The teachers are stupid. They shouldn't have any women in there. They don't know how to teach. And they shouldn't make anyone go to school. You don't want to go, you don't go, that's all. It's ridiculous. I don't remember one thing I learned in school. I don't listen to weakies. My two and a half years in Erasmus High I wasted. I didn't like the whole thing. You have to mix with all those stupid kids. The teachers are even stupider than the kids. They talk down to the kids. Half of them are crazy. If they'd have let me, I would have quit before I was sixteen" is definitely a good senior quote if you want your school to dislike you.
I can think of a lot of Fischer quotes that can't be listed here because they'd violate terms of service. Fischer was such a malevolent individual; its subject to debate whether he was the worst human being to ever win a WC.

Bobby Fischer was an exceptional chess player, but his personal beliefs were absolutely wack (very big understatement)
@Drawgood, one does not have to be truly "intelligent" to be good at chess. Chess is sometimes referred to as a sport, and not all people who are good at sports are intelligent. However, chess is a sport that utilizes the mind, so I guess it could work out? I'm not too sure, this could be out for debate. Sorry for the late response.
When I asked Fischer why he had not played a certain move in our game, he replied: "Well, you laughed when I wrote it down!" -- Mikhail Tal
It really made me laugh.
“Captain Benjamin L. Willard: I was sent on a classified mission, sir.
Bobby Fischer: It's no longer classified, is it? Did they tell you?
Captain Benjamin L. Willard: They told me that you had gone totally insane, and that your methods were unsound; no one would play a3 in that position."
Bobby Fischer: Are my methods unsound?
Captain Benjamin L. Willard: I don't see any method at all, sir."
From a classified recording, Balkans,1992.
bobby fischer was offered to be a 30 second shampoo commerical and was going to be paid $50,000
but he said no because he was not going to be playing chess in it.
lmfao
I remember it was more money, and he declined because he didn't use that shampoo.
