I don't like em (too clunky-looking).
Bobby Fischer's Favorite Chess Set

You might check out this board. It seems to fit the recommended size and wood - but I think it is much more stylish.

The king finials on the HOS Zagreb sets available today are removable - so you can change the traditional cross finial to a ball finial. Could it be that perhaps the originals had removable finials for the kings, queens and bishops, so that you could choose to have the finial contrast the piece or match it? If so, that might explain why the photo above shows Fischer playing with a board on which only the bishop finial contrasts and all the other pieces match.
The HOS Zagreb set is my absolute favourite - it has the added benefit of being relatively inexpensive. Sometimes I wish they would refine the look of the knight a bit and maybe give the rook a bit of a trim so that its midsection matched the king, but those are my only criticisms.

No, the 1950 Dubrovnik set which was Fischer's favorite only had the Bishops with contrasting 'finials' if you check out photos of Svetozar Gligoric you will come accross pics of him playing with these pieces and it's clear that only the Bishops contrast.

Well I can honestly say I pulled the trigger on some Fischer remakes that I really like a lot...Purchased the HOS Commemorative 40th Spassky Fischer '72 Ebony Boxwood set and HOS had the rooks & knights king side stamped like the original for a small additional charge and also got the actual remake board in the pic like the original. Only 40 sets were made and requested serial number 40 which is the last number in the series. Also got the last HOS Spassky Fischer '72 set that was done in Camel and Buffalo Bone as well as the plastic remake one they offer as my player. I also purchased the Dubrovnick 1950 remake set from NOJ in Slovenia along with a Garde German clock. Straight up....totally pleased I purchased them all. Very high quality on all, which is hard to find in today's times, and as close as most will ever get to the real thing. My grandson, with the many years ahead of him, will be happy someday his Pa kept them mint. Many will argue that the remakes will not increase in value over many years, but IMHO I disagree. Enjoy some MFG pics and the sets I have are exactly as pictured.....

I dont like sets where the bishops have different coloured wood on top, just looks odd, like they ran out of the proper colour.

Goodknightmike, where did you get this set?
The Dubrovnik sets are often offered on Ebay. Or you can go to the Noj.Ltd website www.noj.si and order directly from a very nice family owned small business run by Gtrega Novak, a wonderful person to deal with. You won't be disappointed with his gorgeous Dubrovnik sets. They are offered in natural walnut, red or brown stain and in 2 sizes: 91mm or 4" king.
No doubt that the House of Staunton sets are beautiful. I find the Mark of Westminster sets just as beautiful and still heirloom quality - but more affordable.
