For beginners, I think the best learning material is Josh Waitzkin's excellent lectures in Chessmaster 11. He is the one who injected the love of the game to me.
I agree, Chessmaster's course was the first think I went through when I started to play chess and it was pretty good. Irving Chernev's "Logical chess move by move" was my first book and I would recommend that too after you learn some basics and basic tactics. Capablanca's "Chess fundamentals" is also pretty good I think.
ajmeroski, what a coincidence! After completing the Waitzkin series and falling in love with the game, Chernev's book was the first chess book I read!
Thanks for a good book suggestion. I need to learn some logic. I continue to get wiped out by the unorthodox. The totally oddball moves that when I go analyze my play are a part of no known opening. When games go by a logical opening, even for a few moves, I can play a really good game. But the last twenty games I have played here are simply free-for-alls of odd moves.

Just resently got really interested in learning how to play chess properly. Any certain chess books that you recommend?
