How exciting!

Based on that article, it seems quite a few people thought it was in his shoes too. I think more of us would have come to a similar conclusion had we known about his 'foot problems.'

It seems knowing that it was in his shoes wouldn't really make a difference to how security matters should be handled. A thorough search would have covered his shoes.

Ivanov, the inventor of the Sebago variation.

Wait, I read the article, but from what I understood, they DIDN'T remove his shoes. WHAT? It's OBVIOUS that his cheating device is on the feet.

NO ONE who wanted to prove himself innocent would refuse to remove the shoes UNLESS the cheating device was there! It was their chance of catching it and they accepted not to look there??????? What's going on?

Avatar of fabelhaft

His supporters here will probably continue to question the suggestions about searching his shoes instead of just showing him off when taking off his jacket :-) As pointed out by GM Dlugy it's clear that also organisers have been behind him. Especially funny how he was paired in the next round even after refusing to remove his shoes and being forfeited.

Not only in Ivanov a cheat, now we know he has smelly feet!

I thought Ivanov made a beautiful double edged remark. He also could have said in a more Hamlet style that there was something rotten in his shoes.

@tomk69: great pun!

New rule: barefoot tournaments.  Next WC match in Tokyo.

He refused. All they could do was kick him out of the tournament. They can't use force, that would be assault.

I don't know how this works in other countries but this is theft.  A serious crime. Some tournament should work with authorities and get a court order for the search.  Have police force it and then arrest.

It may be a lot of things, but it's not theft.

Maybe "fraud" is the correct term?

maybe he really does have smelly feet, how could he relay the moves to the computer in his shoes anyway? or maybe he has a very sensitive listening device in his shoes and every turn he whispers the move he did so the move is relayed back to his second partner in crime who checks it up on houdini and then relays back to ivanov the computers suggested move through a zapping technique in his toes that sends him the correct brainwave of the move.

come on! thats highly unlikely. maybe he has a tumor in his foot or something. It might be suspicious that he didnt remove shoes but that he was cheating isnt the answer.

Morse code is not "highly unlikely", on the contrary, it's almost certain.

And speaking about socks, I feel the smell of sock...puppets.

I am only wondering which kind of device he uses: since Houdini 3 can only run on an x86 Windows it cannot be a regular smartphone (those with Windows are ARM-based and Intel's phones have Android on board as far as I know).

Either he has a dedicated device or uses Houdini through wine (a Linux program which can run many Windows applications).

I am not defending Ivanov (always believed he has been a cheater) - just being curious (as a programmer) what sort of hardware/OS combination he is using.

Avatar of Pre_VizsIa

Hey dzikus - my apple computer has a x86 emulator on it (for programming in assembly grrr), so is it not possible that someone has written one for android?

Apparently he's handling the suspicions with the Michael Jordan approach...

Indyfilmguy is essentially correct.  The crime is so minor that no prosecuter would want to try the case. If he did take it, the case would be pled out with a small fine.

In  addition, Ivanov was smart not to remove his shoes.  Now we are left only with suspisions not an acutal device.
