You're frothing a little and I can't even read your posts.

All I'm saying is that when it comes to any representations presented as fact on this topic, once we've eliminated those based on junk statistics like the one presented by the original poster, whatever is left over still tells us nothing about whether there is a difference in innate chess ability or if there are other factors at play.

TheGrobe

OK, I tried again -- did you just say that my Mom can't do 6th grade math?

I'm not part of the PC "they must be equal because anything else is unthinkable" crowd, but after re-reading it's clear that your arguments are based solely in sexist anecdotes and conjecture as opposed to any kind of facts or data.

Are there any games that women are better at than men ? There must be many in which both compete ? A few I am thinking of here : checkers, backgammon, monopoly, bridge, go, darts, pool, scrabble ... etc

bigpoison

I don't think Elubas has been in a University calc. 3 course lately.  Guess what?!  There are girls in them!  They can sometimes even manage Cs!Wink

Mind games?

Yes -- I want to set the record straight in stating that my mother made it all the way through to grade seven math.

TheOldReb

Mind games or other games in  which a man's size / strength wouldnt give them any advantage. Pool and darts fits this I think but I dont know if they compete with one another or not. Its my belief that it has to do with fanaticism/obcession/competitive nature.... when I was growing up I saw many boys cry because they failed at something or "got beat" but almost no girls... I think a chess teacher/coach that works with young boys and girls could help us out in this thread...

Cribbage.  I'll bet I have a losing record against every woman I have ever played more than five games of cribbage against.  'Course I'm no better at cribbage than I am at chess.

TheGrobe

I wonder if pool and darts wouldn't end up being a rather unequal contest due to the differences in spatial abilities (http://www.bbc.co.uk/science/humanbody/sex/articles/spatial_tests.shtml).

Memory based games, on the other hand, strike me as an area where women would likely excel.

TheGrobe

Oh, and by mind games I meant messing with mine.

I have met many women in my life, and have come to this conclusion - women and men are not equal.  Woman are more equal than men.  And men are more equal than women.  There is no doubt that men in general dominate most competitive activities.  It is an indisputable fact.  That does not make them better however, it is simply due to the gender roles placed upon us by society.  Chess is predominantly a male activity.  Yes.. I feel the anger rising in some of you, but remember, I'm just painting a picture here.  I would, and this is without proof, but an assumption, assume that most chess players learn from their fathers.  I first played chess with my Dad, and every chess player I've met in real life has learned from his father too.  Fathers typically spend  more time with their male offspring, and hence, they would be more apt to teach chess to their sons over their daughters.  It is not skill level that determines why there are more male GMs, it's just there are more male chess players.

Using ratings to measure a person's ability at chess is dumb. it the same as using standardized test to measure a person's intelligence. I believe chess ability is determined by an individual not their sex. however, girls are better than boys at everything ...Laughing

Grobe, I just told you how males are by nature better in ways other than those statistics even though I think that statistic is valid, I offered more reasons because one statistic alone is not good enough. You refuse to read my post apparently. If it sounds a bit unclear, it's because it's difficult to explain why they are worse (I'm showing why they aren't as interested and that has to do with not being as good) and I said most moms don't like to do math because it's true. Ok, so your mom might, but like I said it goes against mosts' nature. Or maybe 6th is too basic, but fewer can help with your high school math homework. Even though I said how I wasn't sexist (I'm just making observations!) I'm accused.

I can't believe how you misunderstand my posts. Did I ever say no women play chess or are good at math? Absolutely not. But are you going to say there are the same amount? You shouldn't. I'm saying how there is less women who do certain things has to suggest something about general skill. But maybe you just stopped reading my long post. I think there are even more girls than boys going to college, but not so much for math.

No, you're right there, Elubas.  You'll find many more ladies in the English dept.  Ladies sure do like to talk.

You keeping making these broad generalizations of 3 billion people. I know for a fact girls are good at math, i got all A's in calculus and had a math fellowship(with two other girls) this summer researching mathematics that you probably could not understand. so i might be able to help with my future children's homework if my feeble female brain can grasp algebra.

It's the same how there is a generalization that girls do better in english class (especially the projects! English teachers always use one of those for an example). It assumes a certain thing that may not be true, but you can't say that there's not a logical reason for making a generalization. After all, it will be right more often than not. I guess stereotypes are too insulting for some people, but personally I don't care if women are better at that stuff and I would easily admit it. But I guess if I liked that stuff too maybe I would feel left out? Women should not in anyway feel left out from playing the game just because men are a little better at something. Those "women only" things are not meant to make fun; they assume the girls are worse than the best men but they want to include more women and there will be more if they can connect with other women players and have a better chance of winning. They could still become quite good, and they are better at things too. But men are supposed to be better in the problem solving skills, and that explains the more obsession for chess as well as more interested in math. Men admit that women are better at many things like fashion and even looks (as well as many intellectual things, but not particularlay math!), but they can claim to be better at chess in general.

Hi guys,

We have 150 years of chess history.  In all that time there has never been a women capable of competing with men at the highest level.  If the sexes were equal in chess ability, we surely would have had one woman in 150 years that was competitive with the men.

Elubas

No matter how much you try to explain how you aren't sexist, you are I guess to challenge any part of equality at all. Women are better at lots of things too. Just different ones. Even my mom who's a nonchess player will admit that women aren't as good (she says they are lesbians, now I admit that is very mean and untrue but I think it's a joke. I'm not making that generalization!). I guess it's just hard for people to believe "you aren't as good" and then, "please start playing chess" in the same sentence. So I'm sorry to anyone I offended, but in my posts I have been going by facts about the problem solving stuff is more likely to be in the male mind. But it is a very interesting topic since so few women play it even though it's not like sports where you have physical limitations. It seperates the male and female mind in a way.

As a quick sidenote, Grobe, that was a very interesting link you provided. As I know all of you  have guessed, my brain is downright manly, scoring somewehre between "rugged masculinity" and "dirty harry"
