I'm trying to learn and understand this game.  Beginner to the max.  Is there a place for me here?

Avatar of Dutchday

I'm sure there is, there's players of all levels here and information. The slower games are great for playing and getting some tips in the mean time. Just have to find the right people, some will only play and not say anything.

GL and have fun.

This is the place for you.

Welcome and good luck. Remember that no new player wins from the start. Take your lumps while learning and remember that if you keep at it the tables will turn.

Welcome, but could you give us a slighly more detailed description of what you mean by "beginner to the max." That way we can make more helpful suggestions.

Do you know the rules and how the pieces move?

Can you read chess notation?

Can you force checkmate with a Queen and King against a bare King? Or a Rook and King?

Just a general description of your level and experience. Don't be shy! Everyone was a beginner at some point.

I know how to set up the board.  I know white starts first.  I know how the pieces move and that is the extent of my knowledge.  I have never played a game with another person and the computer beats me in ten or less moves.

Thank you SO much Paul.  When teaching myself Italian, no, not fluent yet, I ordered children's  books in Italian.  It's a GREAT starting place.  Thanks for the input.

@OP: Welcome to the best chess site on the web! In addition to playing games, I would advocate joining groups and teams. They're a great way to meet new people, as well as play fascinating team matches and collaborative vote chess games. The possibilities are endless!

I can't really mention any chess site besides chess.com here for fear of getting banned, but I would encourage you to look around for yourself.
