BREAKING CHESS NEWS: KIRSAN DEFEATS KASPAROV in a LANDSLIDE

I guess this happened earlier today in Geneva, Switzerland.  Here is the story from ABC News:

Former world champion Garry Kasparov failed in his bid to oust the eccentric longtime head of the World Chess Federation on Monday in a bitter contest steeped in Russian power plays.

Kasparov, a vocal critic of Vladimir Putin, was the sole challenger against Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, a wealthy businessman known to be supported by the Russian president. The vote was held on the sidelines of an international tournament in Norway.

Delegates at the 2014 Chess Olympiad in the northern city of Tromsoe voted 110-61 in favor of Ilyumzhinov, with four votes annulled.

Ilyumzhinov, who once claimed to have visited an alien spaceship, has headed the governing body of chess, known by its French acronym FIDE, for 19 years.

Well, of course he won. Kasparov was only Chess Champion of the World. Ilyumzhinov was Chess Champion of the Milky Way Galaxy (Earth excluded)!

Even though this didn't affect the final result... what's up with the four votes annulled?

MrDamonSmith

I don't know how good it is media wise to have the president of fide claiming to have been aboard an alien space craft.

Tom Brokaw: Kirsan, did you get "probed"?

Kirsan: Well Tom, what happens on the space craft stays on the space craft.

Probably illegible due to the gallons of vodka provided on the house by the two candidates. Or the annulled voting forms had been filled out by the four ninety-year-olds who couldn't remember why they were supposed to be there and what the bits of paper were for. Or both.

Haha, now I know why they're called space probes Tongue Out

Perhaps the spaceship comment can be chalked up to "cultural differences".

Anyway, does anyone know how to get a nation-by-nation vote tally?  Is there any way to see how the votes compared to 2010?  I'm interested in seeing which nations voted differently this year compared to 2014.  Anyone know where this info is?

I did think Kasparov was a serious candidate who was not scared to get into the down-and-dirty bribery & intimidation type tactics for which FIDE is known.

Also surprised at how nobody here seems to be talking about this election.  Back when K. announced his candidacy last year there were pages and pages of hullabaloo.

Nobody cares?

DrCheckevertim

Kasparov should have been elected.

RIP in chess pieces.

Anyone know where to find the election results state by state?  It'll be interesting to see if any states voted differently this year compared to 2010 (Karpov).

I'm sure many people care, but the election is done. The voters decided the payola was more important than chess. FIDE is a sewer that needs to be cleaned out, but it looks like the garbage will continue to pile up for at least four more years.

Does anybody actually believe that this election was "free and fair"?

Well I do.  Kasparov had just as much opportunity to strong arm and bribe the delegates as the other guy.
