I was in a chess tournament last Saturday. In the 2nd round I was breathing heavily and I couldn't control it that easily due to stress and uncomfortableness and it was very noticeable also distracting. Would I get in trouble if do that? Is that against USCF rules?

Last I knew, if you make lots of noise when you breathe, you have to hold your breathe at the board, and walk out of earshot to breathe again.

😳
I don't see how you could be at fault for breathing!

You should try some deep breathing exercises. That may help a possible future episode you may experience. Running wind sprints may help also.

Practice 3 slow deep breaths, and exhale each slowly through your nose.

If you are still experiencing stress, try to clear your mind, and do 3 more. You may have to excuse yourself, and go to the restroom, or outside to get some fresh air, they may not let you leave nowadays however. Make sure its ok 1st.

Splash cold water on your face, and clear your mind. Then try to do the deep breaths, you can practice this at home before a tournament also.

Also you may find it helps to visualize your opponent in a funny hat, or under garments, whatever makes you amused, it is helpful dealing with stress. Good luck.

You don't have to exhale through the nose BTW, it may be helpful to breathe through your mouth, just exhale as slowly and evenly as you can, you'll get it.
