The coach saw that some kids were afraid to play in a school against rich kids.

He decided to tell the kids a story. He said a hungry dog tried to catch a cat, but the cat could escape. The coach asked the dog “Why didn’t you get the cat?” The dog: “Coach, I was running to get a meal, but the cat was running for his life”.

The coach told the kids that their opponents come from reach families, everything was easy for them. But you - you are running for your life”.

I love the analogy.

The film has a great idea that you can achieve what you want if you'll work hard, but the agenda which goes throughout it ruins everything. If you want to read something really inspiring and intellectual I recommend you the book "Martin Eden" by Jack London - it's definitely worth reading.

Also there are a lot of decent films and books about chess, so I rather recommend you to watch "The Luzhin Defence" with John Turturro and Emily Watson instead of this film.

I watched Queen of Katwe not that long ago, and I immediately recognised what the speech was.
No joke.

I know what you mean, but it did not ruined the movie

The story is great and the actors did a good job.

By the way I highly recommend you to watch "The Luzhin Defence". The difference in quality between these two films is obvious. The film "The Queen of Katwe" is a "classical story of success" seasoned with nasty modern agenda - the whole film can be described in two words: "American Dream". But "The Luzhin Defence" is so dramatic, realistic, deep and has so many meanings that I feel I can't describe it. I have even ordered a book "The Defense" by Vladimir Nabokov and I've red it in one day - that's how it has inspired me!

I saw the movie LD  and I also liked it. I don't think they are comparable. Queen... is based on a true story. The book helps us to remember how difficult life in other countries can be. I admire this coach  as he really care about the kids. It is not an intellectual movie, but for sure also not an American Dream-movie. It is about people fighting to have enough food,  safety and a place to sleep. At least this is the way I perceive the story. I am atheist, but in this story I admire the work of religious people.

Of course dogs can talk! Okay, Pluto can't talk, but Goofy can.

Good book. People complain about the fact that she is a weak chess player compared to titled players around the world but that misses the point I think. from what I read she went to study in the usa and no longer plays chess competitively.

Exactly. Chess gave her and some of the kids a chance to improve their life quality. It is difficult to find a better example of positive aspects of chess.
