Calculation of move

So, I just lost a whole piece due to miscalculating the end result of a long chain of capture/ recapture. When calculating, I always play the whole chain out in my head ( I take, he takes, I take, he takes....). So, my question, is there a better and more efficient way of thinking, to calculate your move in such situations?

as you can see white is a minor piece down and has only got two pawns more than the pawn he traded in thus meaning -3 for the loss of a minor piece +2 for two free pawns makes -1 which is losing materially.
