Can I achieve it?

Hello chess lovers, I turned 29 a couple of days ago. Here on chess.com I have a blitz rating of 1300. Seeing that there is an IM at age10 and Sergey was a GM at 12 and also that Gary was World Chess Champion at 22, what scope do I have now if I take chess seriously? Note that I have to work to feed myself and I have no tournament or classic game experience. Having said all these, I see way towards moving up. I am just not sure how high I can go.

Don't take it too seriously.

Go ahead and enjoy the game but you can never get anywhere near IM, let alone GM, no matter how hard you study.

if you enjoy the game. then there is no problem with patiently and methodically improving.

GM is beyond the wild imagining of your heart; and is a level of chess competence Higher then either you or I can understand.

many years ago I first obtained a blitz rating of 1300.  I realize that blitz games are shallow and cheap, and not like the long slow games you must excel at to become a strong players.

If you ARE serious, begin playing "standard" games (online) and look for opportunities to play in tournaments.   chess tournaments and clubs are played all around the world.   I agree with urk; that surely GM is beyond you- but its simply not known how strong a motivated and passionate adult chessplayer can become.

most of you Newby's (no offense) simply quit.  so that is the first test of your interest.  will you quit just because someone tells you that you can't become one of the worlds best players (which is exactly what a GM is)??

I am a perfectionist but with the infinitum and a serious call for dedication has left me quite clueless. With each game I play, I feel I am wasting my time anyway because with a proper study I could sense my progress alongside.

I think at this age of 29, when I talk about serious chess with almost no experience, I am talking about taking huge risk. The only motivating factor for me would be the fact that I enjoy the game and also that I have a curious mind, naturally.

while, your certainly NOT wasting time in playing the game.

You can't advance without playing the game.

[removed -- MOD] that, I am going for it, we have only one life. I'll put in the effort whenever I can, apart for working to feed myself. Let me see how I progress.

It is hard to say if pragmatism and honesty can help people asking about their future potential. Maybe creating some complex formula to paste in such threads would be way to go?

Are you going to starve yourself?

You can make 2000.  Dont confuse online ratings with real ratings.

People don't like being told what they can't do. It seems like a fairly simple board game...

A young brain has the potential to make more neural connection pathways, you might already know it right?.So the younger we learn a language or skill the faster we master it and the longer we retain it,same applies in chess, arts, sports, education and every thing in human life.So a matured brian in an adult must have lost or usedup most of its new neural pathway creation potential by say about 13 to 15 years. So when a matured adult and a novice to the game asks the the question of attaining mastery in chess the answer is a simple 'NO'.Some may have done it in  their later years of life, but they are an anomaly and dont apply to the rest of us.So our only way is to play this game for enjoyment and not for mastering.Hope this answers your question.

You can't progress anywhere in life, let alone in chess, if you starve yourself. Working for the basic needs and wants, I'll put my effort it.

I quoted the rating to just give you a rough estimation of where I stand now.

The stats for GM title is one out of five million peoples or more. The average amount of GM is two in every country ? Perhaps FM or IM title is good enough.
