2 years ago IM Johan Salomon was at ca 1900. Now he just got 2401 and became IM. He has played a lot international tournaments, and also been watching a lot of the other games in those tournaments. He have done a lot of other things too and have very strong support from his parents.

Joahn is 17 years.

@Scottrf Okay, I'll be NM in three years and FM in six. I'm 1839 now, so I'll remember to send you a message once I get there.

1800-2200 is harder than 0-1800...

I am aware. Still, though, NM is my goal, and I think I can get there. From there, I may not care to try for FM but I'll get to that decision once I've achieved my main goal.

Actually after some time I started (july 2014) I was not so much into chess as i am now. I was almost inactive for 3 months.

And you guys are right about playing otb but maybe reading another book first is better?!

Nope.

There are plenty of resources online e.g. http://www.chesstactics.org/

But just play proper games and analyse them.

Are the Open sections in your area above 2000 or above 1800 ?   When you play an  event that is FIDE rated it is still necessary for your opponents to have a fide rating for your games to count . And it is also necessary for you to win or draw some of these games to get a FIDE rating in the beginning .  FIDE has many strange rules and they are always changing it seems ... I didnt get a FIDE rating until after I moved to Europe .

I'm 21 and I started playing last july. Here's my ratings.

Standard 1068 but I'm really lazy at standard online chess, last week I was 1180

Tactics 1048 (when I started playing was something about 700)

Chesstempo blitz 1278.5

Chesstempo standard 1186.8

The only thing I have to do is go to the University. I have no intention of having a girlfriend or kids so maybe I get more free time than a regular guy.

Hello,

I just wanted to say, Argentinian girls are stunning...for you to not want a girlfriend is a little strange...hopefully when you are older, you will see sense.

Take care

I dont have the patience :P maybe if i find a female chess player... but thats very rare oh well

@Reb That is a good question and I believe it depends on the tournament. I should try to figure that out for certain though. In any case, the national title is my main goal. If I get that, I may be happy enough just to settle down and play completely for fun and enjoyment.

@goingforyourqueen I wasn't saying improvement is impossible. I was saying that it gets harder, because even at your age, nobody gains 600+ points in one year (unless they're incredibly underrated) like you can when you're a teenager.

I don't know about that.

I tried to make FM but failed .  Its one of the few chess goals I set for myself and didnt achieve .  Such is life ...

A friend of mine is 2264 FIDE nowadays, at age 43. He started playing when he was 8. He doesn't expect getting any title in the future. My respect for titled players is not really about their credentials, is because is a really huge achievement.

Reb maybe with a gm helping you.. but you know why kids can improve fast? Because 1000 fide rating seems like something a kid would have... then theres no way but up. But wich kind of adult would have this very low fide rating to begin with? Almost impossible

Thanks for the invitation but I am 62 and no longer in the hunt for chess titles . If I were 20 years younger I might take you up on your offer .

Absolutely ! Seeking a "title" can be like seeking the "approval of others". Who cares ! There is an average of two of these type of threads a week from what I would guess were younger players.

And I will celebrate 53 in fagernes, and run one little step closer to CM. I never know if I ever get to CM, but I will enjoy the journey. From 1428 fide, it is a really long road to travel.

I think the masterclass-startlist at Fagernes is very beautiful, but I do lack the  selfconfidence to go in that class this year. I think I first have to make interesting games against 2000-players, before I go against the masters.

I quit chess when I was 15, and thought that I didnt have any mastertalent. Later the doubt came creeping. Maybe it could have been possible?  And I am very curious about if middleaged people can improve like they were kids.  So, i think it could be great fun to get a title , and show them that age is no problem.
