Here is one older guy having a go.
Can I become a FM?

Are the Open sections in your area above 2000 or above 1800 ? When you play an event that is FIDE rated it is still necessary for your opponents to have a fide rating for your games to count . And it is also necessary for you to win or draw some of these games to get a FIDE rating in the beginning . FIDE has many strange rules and they are always changing it seems ... I didnt get a FIDE rating until after I moved to Europe .
I dont get to pick that much because I will try to play only on my vacation.. soon i guess. And i have no idea how well i can perform because i never played long games (30min+) but im quite aware of how to calculate forcing moves so i can spend a long time in a game already
Hell yes i know a 55yo starter that became a cm after 4 years so hes a 60yo playing at 2200 strenght
Chesstempo standard 1186.8
now im 1259.3 (1 month away from 1 year playing)
I think I can make it to CM at least if I really want. My main problem is I almost not play... blitz is stupid and standard is quite boring (if not otb). I study much more than play. I dont think I play a serious game for months...

Let me give you some old man's advice. Chess is a great hobby to have, but it's nothing compared to finding a nice girl, getting married, starting a family, making babies, and surrounding yourself with people that love you.

Skip the marriage and having kids! Otherwise, good advice.

My goal is to be U.S.C.F. NM. If I get to that, I'll be satisfied. It's perhaps my biggest life goal actually, since I have no idea what else I'll be doing in ten years. Once I get to it, I have no idea if I'll stop, if I'll just coach, if I'll try for FM, or if I'll do something else. And it's not for any particular reason. Just because I've wanted to since I was under 1000.
Reading this years later and seeing the NM next to your name, congrats! Quite an accomplishment.
I tried to make FM but failed . Its one of the few chess goals I set for myself and didnt achieve . Such is life ...
Didnt achieve? Or didnt achieve yet? What about coming to Norway in the easter and grab it? Outplay GM Jon ludvig Hammer, Im Aryan Tari, IM Johan Salomon, and a big GM -bunch?

I will be there, and can give you some guiding.
Thanks for the invitation but I am 62 and no longer in the hunt for chess titles . If I were 20 years younger I might take you up on your offer .
And I will celebrate 53 in fagernes, and run one little step closer to CM. I never know if I ever get to CM, but I will enjoy the journey. From 1428 fide, it is a really long road to travel.
I think the masterclass-startlist at Fagernes is very beautiful, but I do lack the selfconfidence to go in that class this year. I think I first have to make interesting games against 2000-players, before I go against the masters.
I had 1500 Nr at 13 and 1600 at 16 (i didnt play any tournaments or studied between) actually i only played 2 official tournaments before 19. Afterwards it started to go both ways, i gained an insulting 1200-1300 elo in a tournament, fortunately it by itself went to 1500 but for the first time in my life it is also decreasing trend (from 1511->1498)
At my age (28) with my rating i am someone rare still aiming inside for titles, given that there is plenty of 10-12 years old 1900-2000 in my city. (And 1400-1700 range 40-60 years old people with never changing elos although they play every tournament) Weaker people than me in my age simply quit chess, most 20-30 years old active players 2000+ here
