Can I use GPU/CUDA with engines?

Hi all,

I'm considering buying a computer to do some serious engine analysis. Can I use GPU/CUDA for this?

Thanks!

That didn't help much.

A while back there was a group using high end computers to play different engines against each other.  I believe the minimum hardware to join was a 5 or 7 core processor, a 64 bit version of windows, and 8 gb. of memory.  All their engines were rated over 3000 with the minimum hardware.  Doubt if you really need more.

Name of the group was The Power Chess Project (I found it in the archives), but unfortunately the link to it no longer works.  The GPU/CUDA  looks like overkill to me, but I'm no computer expert.  I'm using a cheap dual processor  $330 Best Buy special with Fritz 12 upgraded to a Houdini engine and it works fine; your mileage may vary.Wink

Thanks, badd...

I don't think it's overkill for what I want to do. The question is: is it possible?

OK, now I see what you are trying to do.  I'm sure you have already googled GPU/CUDA and chess.  There are obviously people working on exactly what you want to do; there is even a blog called CUDAchess, but it all looks like it is in the development stage.  Silly me, I thought GPU's were just to enable fast frame rates for gaming....Who knew?
