As much as I would like to see super GMs playing in more open tournaments I have the feeling that they could be bored by the low competition. Since it is a swiss system they get to play players who are hundreds of points lower rated than them for the first several rounds and only later do they play GMs or strong IMs. They also probably make more money playing in those FIDE grand prixs or super tournaments than they could with opens.

Players like Magnus need really good competition in order to make them stronger, so having him play players like those in the top 10 is a healthy thing.

Have you ever played in a big open tourney such a Aeroflort Open with big cash prizes ? If you had, you would understand that nobody rolls over for anybody.  Most play to win, every round.  They wouldn't care if its Magnus Carlsen or Joey Patzer.  Maximum effort is extended no matter who.

My understanding is Carlsen has never won an open in his life.

I think that was the criticism varelse, that these super GM's don't play in open tournaments, but controlled pools. Could be wrong though.

Exactly right.  It is a club that enables its members to occupy a privledged position.  Playing amongst themselves and making sure outsiders stay out.  Its politics of course.  Players such as Peter Leko, who haven't won anything in years, continue to get endless invites, whilst other players such as Topalov and Shirov (who play far better dynamic chess) are now on the outside looking in.

Its a dirty game.  Two players from the 90's Valeri Salov and Andrei Sokolov, both better ( in my opinion) then Kasparov and Karpov, basically forced out of the game by the two k's who leaned on organizers not to invite them to the presitigious events.  No invites, no money, no livelihood.

What provocative info. Is it true?

I see you are extremely good at reproducing the FUD on Kevin Spraggett's site- congrats.

The real facts about Salov is that his chronic health problem (about which everybody was aware, Spragget included- although he prefers conspiracy theories instead of just mentioning it) prevented him from playing consistently at the highest level.

Incidentally, my good friend GM Krum Georgiev, once Bulgaria's #1 by far, has virtually abandoned competitive chess due to Salov's very same health problem- and unlike Salov, who never won a single game against The Beast, Krum does have a victory against him, and a very spectacular one at that. And of course, he never attributed his competitive decline to conspirators and dark forces- he is a disciplined guy, and this shows at once.

All i know is that Andrei Sokolov lost a so called "superfinals match" (Karpov was then ranked 2nd in elo and Sokolov at 3rd at that time) against karpov in the late 80s candidates match. (I hope my uncle's story is correct or im going to get  bashing from you guys.)

What about Alexander Khalifman? Isn't he the one who crossed the barrier of 3000 or have i misunderstood/misread something?

He may had a tournament performance over 3000, which is rare but not impossible - but no, his rating never ever came close. Spraggett probably mentions Sokolov due to the fact that himself had eliminated him (pretty deservedly) at the first round of the '87 candidates matches. Since 2000 he is a nationalized French, and he never managed to win the French championship, despite his many tries.

Spragget was not my source.  Interesting that you should make that assumption though not based on any facts.  I guess we should add the ability of Clairvoyance to the long list of your abilities.

No, but one day i believe he will get to 2900.
