can monkey's play chess?

i heard that chimpanzees are  very smart.  they have been astronauts in the past and were sent into space.  they even have a movie about apes taking over the Earth.

do you think monkeys / chimpanzees could learn to play chess?

I think they were mainly sent into space due to the number of failed space missions at that time.

I think chimps are very intelligent and could remember a limited repertoire based on incentives given for right moves and remembered theory.

So, at least in the U.S., if you could get a monkey to annotate a chess game, the annotations would be public domain and not copyrightable. FWIW.

i think you could teach them the rules and tha basic of opening theory. you would have to give them lots of candy for a good move and no candy for a bad move. however if a monkey would play chess, what would the best one´s top rating be? 400? 600? 800? mabey 1000?

Seriously though, some are taught sign-language. So, it stands to reason, they could learn some basic chess.

He did OK, but a few players complained that he should have sat down like a human - they claimed that it put them off to see their opponent swinging from a tyre.

Sorry...I was eating a banana, and throwing feces around.  If you watch some of my games, you would swear monkeys/chimps/apes/etc. could play chess.
