Can somebody explains what is the logic behind 1 min, 3 min or 5 min. games?

I see more people here play Blitz and Lightening games than 15 min, 30 min or other longer versions. I also see when such games are being analysed on various forums, people often excuse bad play with it being shorter timed game. Personally amost of the short games I have seen were pretty low on quality.

I am playing chess for sometime and I believe that the beauty of chess lies in tanctical and positional brilliance. We all marvel games when we something unique, brilliantly thought.

I don't understand what game of chess is possible in 1min. or 3 min.? In my opinion,  a chess game should atleast be 15 min. game. I have seen numerous lame players winning a lost game just because their internet speed is better. ( can you believe on yahoo's chess portal you will see lots of games with 0 min. time limit?)

Please explain the logic of such  short games where tactical  supereority doesn't matter. In my humble opinion, such games just make ur game worse. New should strictly be advised not to play short games.

It really does help you practice your openings (not that I am even studying opening theory; I just play fast time controls for fun). You win in bullet when you have good/easy positions to play.

The very best players on the planet play 1-minute and 3-minute chess almost exclusively when they play online.

These are chess time controls, just play chess. ... FAST.

I believe you are mostly correct sir.  Titled players of course use such short time controls as a showcase for their magnificent skills.  With the exception of using 5 minute blitz to try out, and test your knowledge of, unfamiliar openings, I agree that it's pretty useless.  Oh an occasional game to test how well you handle time pressure is fine, but the problem is people get addicted to short time controls and forget what chess is all about.  I have a good friend who is no dummy but admits his addiction to short time controls (he'll reluctantly play a 10 minute game).  His rationale is simple; he plays to relax and longer time controls make him have to think too hard.  At least he's honest....

Learning how to play 1-minute games helps after the first 14 minutes of a 15-minute game.

One very real reason GMs play blitz chess almost exclusively online is to reduce the possibility of playing against a computer. The faster the time control, the harder it is to use outside assistance. And when someone does use an engine, it's really obvious in fast time controls.

I like blitz games to practice my openings and familiar positions, and I often play 1 min games. Afterwards, in my analysis, I find few, if not no, errors.

The logic is that people play them for fun.  Not every person is after the same things from chess that you are after.

Adding a 5 second time bonus provides your Game in 1/5 up to Game in 10/5 with plenty of time to reach the end of the game "on the board," not "on the clock."

Very Simple.  And you are still practicing chess.  Q.E.D.  Smile

Or you can start (yet another thread) to complain about it.  Duh?

When you play live in classical tournament you can get into time trouble. We all saw that more than once. People often put themselfs in position when theres few minutes left on whole game. You can practice fast play here. Simple as that.

Also test new openings before play something new in classical game.

Also when you play fast game you play with human, not computer

Also its harder to find equal opponent for longer games

Also its fun

Also people show you their tricks and opening traps. You are just learning.

True, 1min games are wierd. But 3 or 5min are long enough. You can really stop and think in few critical moments.

Everybody enjoys a win. People with tons of knowledge about chess use this advantage to the hilt in faster time controls, thereby producing a win most of the time. When they see a novelty being played in some big tournaments they can immediately apply it in their next game. For them, that's where the fun is.

mindless fun

Its all beat the clock. Weird.

Cuz it's much much more fun than longer time controls.

i would challenge this idea of"chess should last at least x minutes" by saying you could always make it longer. what makes you think a 15 minute allows for "tactical superiority" when you could play a three day corrospondance games where that would in almost any case have infinitely more "tactical superiority" (whatever that means anyways)?

yes you could always argue 15 and 30 minute games are good because not enough people play longer than that for live chess while they still allow for some thinking but you certainly have to think in 1 minute games too and if people enjoy that more than 15 minute games then so be it.

The arguments against blitz and bullet chess should have ended once the best players in the world showed they play thousands of blitz and bullet games, and actually improve as they play!

Hikaru Nakamura and Fabiano Caruana are among the young guns who honed their skills playing blitz and bullet.

It would be a terrible mistake to say that they got better only by playing blitz and bullet chess. They had to work HARD at their craft to get as good as they are. But at least PART of that work is the practical tactics training they get by playing fast chess.

I play a lot of 5 minute Blitz simply because it's fun. I don't take Chess all that seriously, it's just a game and I don't want to have to dedicate hours every time I want to play a little.

Thinking pattern in a 1 minute game: How do I not hang my pieces immediately.

I think 5 minutes games otb is the fewest minute I would play myself.
the logic is to learn how to play under time pressure - you still have to watch out what the opponent is playing otherwise you lose fast.

here a good memory and the ability to think fast will benefit you.

to the OP - fast games can have a downside - if you have to play slow games. you are nearly trained to move fast if you see a good move.
therefore it is very difficult to slow down in 2 hours game after a 5 minutes tournament you literally have to sit on your fingers not to move too fast. So to some degree I agree that new players shouldn't play less than 10 minutes games.
