Can someone help me?

Hello,

I like to consider myself to be an intermediate chess player, and to improve my chess game, a friend bought me a chess book called My System by Aron Nimzowitsch.

Has anyone read this book? I was wondering if I could ask some questions to someone who is more advanced than me and familiar with the book to help me understand it better?

Hello,

I was looking for a more detailed explanation about what the author means by “Intermezzo” and “Liquidation”? Both are located in the first few pages of the book in the developing stage, but I am not understanding them completely, or at least how the author describes them.

Will have many more questions as I read further.

Thanks.

What is the purpose of an intermezzo, though?

And I thought by "liquidation" he meant to create a serious of exchanges, essentially creating a domino effect, that will eliminate tension on yourself and/or the centre of the board?

I thought liquidation would be something like taking a positional advantage and converting it into a tangible material advantage by resolving all tension in the position, basically buy something with your $ and take it home.

Yes, Nimzowitsh means that is the situation described (I own the book) the player can't keep the tension anymore without experiencing problems. So he "liquidates" by exchanging several pieces, solving the tension and remaining with a modest disadvantage.

"intermezzo" moves or "in-between" moves are moves that break the expected flow of the game. For example you capture a piece, thinking that the opponent will capture it back; he is a piece down so he must recapture right?. Instead he gives a check to force your king in a bad position and then recaptures your piece back. Your opponent got the advantage by means of an intermezzo move you missed.

That said, it's not really important, this is merely a matter of terminology.
