Can the rating be trusted?

I have some doubts that the increase in rating reflects the improvement of my game. In a week I reached 1500 from 725 I received after the first games. On the one hand I felt that victories against opponents from 1400 became more demanding. On the other hand I know nothing except the rules; the only concept I have heard of is "control of the center", which deeply irritates me (almost everyone makes the same moves at the beginning and shoves their vanguard in your face). And only last night I learned the names of the pieces and other details. Can the rating be trusted?
