Looks like he can't.

White will have to play 1.Kd6, or else black b-pawn will promote soon. Then black plays 1...Bf5, protecting c8, and 2...Bc8. If white tries to attack the Bishop (via a7 or e7) black plays ...b5 to promote the pawn and ...Bh3 (for example) to protect c8.

Are these puzzles from the Timman book you have?

Avatar of Tantale

No these puzzles come from my page http://www.jmrw.com/Chess/Chess_Curiosities1.htm but are not from Jan Timman.

This one is from Sarychev

Ouch, gave up to soon and checked with Houdini... White can indeed draw. Don't think I would have found the solution in an OTB game...

This is the famous anti-triangular manouvre starting with 1.Kc8!

One can work out the rest.

Oh, one can, can one?

Kc8 Bf5 Kb7 b5 and ... how is black's pawn stopped?

I don't have a chessboard handy to putter around with, but I sure don't see it. *edit* wait a minute that line is totally retarded... and I didn't have wine with dinner, either... hang on lemme have another look at this...

FFS! How long have I been at this site you needed to tell me that? Do I have a brain tumor? Sheesh. I better stay indoors and away from power tools tonight.

I believe I've been spoofed by an IM. Oh cruel fate. *shakes fist at uncaring heavens* --

Heavens respond: Not spoofed. You fail. Do not misinterpret this as caring.

@JG27Pyth: 2.Kb7 is wrong, white must play 2.Kd7. Kd7 brings the white king closer to both blacks pawn and f5. On the next move white will play Kd6, forcing black to play ...Bf5 (if he hasn't already done so) to prevent promotion of the white pawn. Then black gains another tempo with Ke5...
